Barmouche
The name loosely translates to "barfly" and the lounge enjoys its share of regulars. It's cosmopolitan, with techno-bistro decor and a long, undulating bar. But it's the food at celebrity Chef Mark Tarbell's restaurant that's causing the buzz. Shellfish shines on the appetizer menu with steamed mussels, cornmeal crusted clams and just-shucked oysters. This locally favored chef offers Boullabaisse, Scotch Beef and even his Mom's own macaroni and cheese dish.
Culinary Cafe
Under the guidance of chef/instructors, Phoenix College students display their culinary talents at this small lunch spot. The cafe affords students the chance to hone their culinary skills and gives patrons an opportunity to dine on gourmet fare at extremely fair prices. Contemporary furnishings and artwork create an inviting dining space. A standard menu includes salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes and the specials change weekly. A typical 3-course meal: marinated red cabbage and beats on curly endive; grilled chicken or sea bass stuffed with goat cheese and served with black beans and papaya relish or sea bass; lemon tart for dessert. A three-course lunch is $7.25. The days and hours of operation vary according to the school calendar, please call in advance for information and reservations.
Morton's of Chicago
You won't find the "ladies who lunch" lining up at this restaurant. With a smoker-friendly lounge, the place has a men's club-like atmosphere. Previously chosen by Zagat's Survey as a top restaurant, it features dark, classic styling. Steaks and hefty chops are charbroiled to perfect doneness. Meals are a la carte with sides ranging from several potato options to fresh vegetables. Full bar service is available. Entrees range $20-30.
