During your Baltimore vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
City Cafe
There's an edgy, urban energy to this small eatery, located in the lovely midtown neighborhood of Mount Vernon. The crisp, black and white décor is simple to the point of being severe and the very large front windows provide a good view of the surrounding urban bustle. The inside is generally crowded too, especially the front take-out area. In back, table service, and you'll find some excellent Nouvelle American cuisine. The Southwestern Chicken, grilled with a red pepper glaze, is a real eye-opener.
New Orleans Grill
This charming restaurant is housed in a renovated building in the heart of Canton, the city's hippest waterfront neighborhood. In this casual space, patrons dine at wooden booths adorned with linen napkins or at the full-service bar. Whole steamed crayfish and Seafood Creole are among the most popular entrees on the menu. The chef has also created a delightful "late fare" menu that includes sandwiches, soup and salads. The items are a bit more expensive than typical pub grub ($7 to $10), but they're worth the price.
Ruby Lounge (The)
This intimate, ultra-mellow downtown lounge has paneled walls, long neat rows of small tables and an imaginatively stocked bar (Chocolate Martini, anyone?). Excellent background music (Mingus, Miles, et al) makes this lounge a great nightspot for those who believe the wee hours are a time to relax and enjoy a quiet drink with friends. The lounge also offers a menu featuring first-rate entrées, as well as lighter fare. It's a pricey night out, but worth it.
