During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Downtown
Opened in 1993, the downtown branch is the second location of the Museum of Contemporary Art (the original branch is in La Jolla). Two large and two smaller galleries present changing exhibitions of nationally and internationally distinguished contemporary artists; plan to spend about half an hour here. Lectures and tours for adults and children are also offered. The first Thursday evening of every month is "TNT" (Thursday Night Thing), with eclectic artist events and drawing the martini set. In 2005 MCA will take over the baggage building of the Santa Fe depot across the street, which will almost triple the exhibition space at this branch, making it the preeminent museum in downtown. Docent tours are available on request.
Giant Dipper Roller Coaster
A local landmark for almost 80 years, the Giant Dipper is one of two surviving fixtures from the original Belmont Amusement Park (the other is The Plunge swimming pool). After sitting dormant for 15 years, the vintage wooden roller coaster, with more than 2,600 feet of track and 13 hills, underwent extensive restoration and reopened in 1991. If you're in the neighborhood (especially with older kids), it's worth a stop, but adults may find the whole experience a bit too spine-rattling. You must be at least 50 inches tall to ride the roller coaster. You can also ride on the Giant Dipper's neighbor, the Liberty Carousel ($2), and other carny-style rides (unlimited ride wristband $17).
Cabrillo National Monument
Breathtaking views mingle with the early history of San Diego, which began when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo arrived in 1542. His statue dominates the tip of Point Loma, 422 feet above sea level, which is also a vantage point for watching migrating Pacific gray whales en route from the Arctic Ocean to Baja California December through March. A self-guided tour of the restored lighthouse (1855) illuminates what life was like here more than a century ago (fog and low clouds made the lighthouse ineffective so another was built close to the water in 1891). National Park Service rangers lead walks at the monument, and there are tide pools to explore at the base of the peninsula. On the other side of the point is the Bayside Trail, a 3.2-mile round-trip down to a lookout over the bay. Free 30-minute videos and slide shows on Cabrillo, tide pools, and the whales are shown on the hour daily from 10am to 4pm. Note the view from the visitor center to the left (north); the blocky structure on the water is the navy's nuclear submarine base. The drive from downtown takes about a half-hour.
Ocean Park Inn
This modern oceanfront motor hotel offers simple, attractive, spacious rooms with contemporary furnishings. Although the inn has a smidgen of sophistication uncommon in this casual, surfer-populated area, you won't find much solitude with the boisterous scene outside. But you can't beat the sand access (directly on the beach) and the view (ditto). Rates vary according to view, but most rooms have at least a partial ocean view; all have a private balcony or patio. Units in front are most desirable, but it can get noisy directly above the boardwalk; try for the second or third floor, or pick one of the three junior suites, which have huge bathrooms and pool views.
Omni San Diego Hotel
San Diego's newest downtown property is noteworthy for the fourth-floor "skybridge" that connects it with Petco Park -- it's the only hotel in the U.S. directly linked to a major-league facility. Twelve rooms even have (limited) views of the field. There's also a signature suite decked out in baseball collector's items (trimmed in the Padres' orange and black color scheme), and the hotel's common areas are decorated with baseball memorabilia, such as Babe Ruth's 1932 contract with the Yankees and Joe DiMaggio's cleats from his 1941 streak. If you want to be in the heart of the baseball action, this is it. The rest of the year, this $124 million, 32-story high-rise competes for the business crowd, luring conventioneers with 20,000 square feet of meeting space and an up-to-the-minute business center. Rooms feature work desks, dual-line telephones, and 330-count Egyptian cotton sheets, while a sixth-floor rooftop terrace has a double-sided fireplace, an outdoor swimming pool, and a Jacuzzi.
Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter
With a location at the foot of the Gaslamp Quarter and immediately across the street from the Convention Center, this hotel is ideally situated for business travelers. Yet unlike some of its competition, the Hilton doesn't overwhelm with size, making it a great place for guests who want to be close to the action (which includes loads of restaurants, nightlife, and the ballpark within a few blocks), but not get lost in the shuffle. The hotel opened in 2001 on the site of the old Bridgeworks building -- part of San Diego's original wharf a century ago; much of the brick façade was incorporated into the hotel's polished design.Standard rooms boast upmarket furniture, including an overstuffed chair and ottoman, down comforters, and pillow-top mattresses. There are suites and an executive floor, but the really snazzy picks are rooms in the intimate Enclave wing, a converted office space next to the main building which features 30 oversize guestrooms with towering ceilings, custom furnishings, Frette linens, and lavish bathrooms sporting whirlpool tubs. No two of the Enclave units have the same floor plan, but they are the handsomest hotel rooms downtown, resembling a swinging loft far more than any typical chain hotel.
