During your Denver vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Colorado History Museum
The Colorado Historical Society's permanent exhibits include "The Colorado Chronicle," an 1800-to-1949 timeline that uses biographical plaques and a remarkable collection of photographs, news clippings, and paraphernalia to illustrate Colorado's past. Dozens of dioramas portray episodes in state history, including an intricate re-creation of 19th-century Denver. There's also a life-size display on early transportation and industry. The first major new permanent exhibit at the museum in some time, "Ancient Voices," is slated to open in early 2005, a $400,000 multimedia exhibit dedicated to Colorado's native tribes and their history. It will be followed by another new exhibit, "Confluence of Cultures," which will depict the Pioneer era when it opens in 2006. The museum offers a series of lectures and statewide historical and archaeological tours. Its gift shop is also worth a visit. Allow 1 hour.

Six Flags Elitch Gardens Theme Park
A Denver tradition established in 1889, this amusement park moved to its present downtown site in 1995. The 45-plus rides include Twister II, an unbelievable 10-story roller coaster with a 90-foot drop and dark tunnel; the Flying Coaster, a one-of-a-kind "hang gliding" experience where passengers lie facedown; the Halfpipe, a snowboarding-themed thrill ride that involves 16 passengers on a 39-foot board; the 220-foot, free-fall Tower of Doom; and a fully restored 1925 carousel with 67 hand-carved horses and chariots. Patrons of all ages can enjoy the Island Kingdom Water Park while the little ones have fun on pint-sized rides in the Looney Tunes MovieTown. There are also musical revues and stunt shows, games and arcades, food, shopping, and beautiful flower gardens. Allow 3 hours.

City Park
Denver's largest urban park covers 330 acres (96 sq. blocks) on the east side of uptown. Established in 1881, it retains Victorian touches. The park encompasses two lakes (with boat rentals and fishing), athletic fields, jogging and walking trails, a free children's water feature, playgrounds, tennis courts, picnic areas, and an 18-hole municipal golf course. In summer, there are concerts. The park is also the site of the Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science (including its IMAX Theater), discussed elsewhere in this chapter.

Hotel Monaco
Billing itself as "Denver's hippest high-style luxury hotel," the Hotel Monaco is a standout for the Kimpton Group chain. With eye-catching interiors inspired equally by Art Deco and French design, the hotel occupies a pair of renovated historic buildings in the heart of the central business district. This is one of the few downtown hotels that is 100% pet-friendly -- the staff even delivers guests a named goldfish upon request. (The establishment also has a mascot, a Jack Russell terrier named Lily Sopris.) Rooms have a rich style, equal parts sinful red and snazzy yellow, with perks such as CD stereos, terry-cloth robes, and Starbucks coffee. With jetted tubs, wet bars, and VCRs, the generously sized suites are even more luxurious. You might bump into a celebrity here -- the Monaco is a favorite of pro sports teams, rock bands, and Hollywood types, who often stay in the "music suites," named for and decorated after John Lennon, Janis Joplin, and Miles Davis. Another perk is the nightly "Altitude Adjustment Hour" in the lobby, where guests enjoy complimentary glasses of wine along with 5-minute massages from the employees of the on-site Aveda Spa.

Innkeeper of the Rocky Mountains
A member of Hostelling International, this centrally located hostel is in a bustling urban area just off Colfax Avenue, within walking distance of more than 50 restaurants as well as all the major downtown attractions. Facilities include a community kitchen, lockers, laundry machines, Internet access, and a cafe. Each dorm room has no more than four beds; there are also five private bed-and-breakfast rooms in two adjacent houses. The front door is always locked and someone is on the premises all night. Under the same ownership are a nearby B&B and guesthouse, and a lodge in the Rockies.

Castle Marne Bed & Breakfast
A National Historic Landmark, Castle Marne is an impressive stone fortress designed and built in 1889 by the renowned architect William Lang for a contemporary silver baron. It was so named because a subsequent owner's son fought in the Battle of the Marne during World War I.The inn is furnished with antiques, fine reproductions, and family heirlooms. Several rooms have private balconies with hot tubs, and 2002 saw the addition of a second suite with an outdoor hot tub for two. Three rooms have old-fashioned bathrooms with pedestal sinks and cast-iron claw-foot tubs. A gourmet breakfast (two seatings) is served in the original formal dining room, and a proper afternoon tea is served daily in the parlor. Smoking is not permitted.
