Captain Bob's Adventure Cruises
See the majestic Windward Coast the way it should be seen -- from a boat. Captain Bob will take you on a 4-hour, lazy-day sail of Kaneohe Bay aboard his 42-foot catamaran, which skims across the almost-always calm water above the shallow coral reef, lands at the disappearing sandbar Ahu o Laka, and takes you past two small islands to snorkel spots full of tropical fish and, sometimes, turtles. The color of the water alone is worth the price. This is an all-day affair, but hey, getting out on the water is the reason you came to Hawaii, right? A shuttle will pick you up at your Waikiki hotel between 9 and 9:30am and bring you back at about 4pm -- it's a lot quicker than taking TheBus (no. 55 or 56).

Kapiolani Park
In 1877, King David Kalakaua gave 130 acres of land to the people of Hawaii and named it after his beloved wife, Queen Kapiolani. This truly royal park has something for just about everyone: tennis courts, soccer and rugby fields, archery, picnic areas, wide-open spaces for kite flying and Frisbee throwing, and a jogging path with aerobic exercise stations. On Sundays in the summer, the Royal Hawaiian Band plays in the bandstand, just as they did during Kalakaua's reign. The Waikiki Shell, located in the park, is host to a variety of musical events, from old Hawaiian songs to rock and roll.

Makaha Valley Country Club
This beautiful public course offers three tees to choose from. You can probably play your handicap from the middle tee, so for a challenge, you might want to go for the back tee, still a sporting par-69 for the 6,369 yards. The course presents a few challenges along the way: numerous trees and an abundance of water (especially on the 3rd hole, which has a couple of small lakes right at a 90-degree dogleg, followed by a stand of trees). You might want to get an early tee time, as the afternoons in Makaha Valley can get windy. The last hole is a doozy, a 494-yard, par-5 with two 90-degree turns to get up to the green. Facilities include driving range, practice greens, club rental, and clubhouse with restaurant.

Sheraton Waikiki
Occupying two 30-story towers, this is by far the biggest of the four Sheratons on the beach. The lobby is immense and filled with shops, travel desks, and people. Not surprisingly, this hotel hosts numerous conventions; if you're not comfortable with crowds and conventioneers, book elsewhere. However, size has its advantages: The Sheraton has everything from a fabulous kids' program to historical walks and cooking demonstrations for Mom and Dad. Plus, you can "play and charge" at Waikiki's other Sheraton hotels.It's hard to get a bad room here. A whopping 1,200 units have some sort of ocean view, and 650 rooms overlook Diamond Head. Accommodations are spacious, with big lanais to take in those magnificent views. For the budget-conscious, the Sheraton Manor Annex occupies a separate adjacent wing and offers all the services and beachfront of the main hotel. The views aren't the best, and the rooms are small (two people, max) and modestly appointed (no lanai), but the price is hard to beat.Facilities: 4 restaurants (including an open-air spot for casual buffet meals and the glamorous Hanohano Room, which offers gourmet dining in a spectacular setting); 3 bars; nightclub; 2 large outdoor pools, including one of the biggest and sunniest along the Waikiki beachfront; access to Makaha Golf Club's golf and tennis facilities (about an hour away); fitness center; watersports equipment rentals; bike rental; children's program with activities ranging from catamaran sailing to nightly movies; game room; concierge; activity desk; car-rental desk; business center; shopping arcade; room service (6am-midnight); in-room massage; babysitting; coin-op washer/dryers; same-day laundry service and dry cleaning (except holidays).

Aston at the Waikiki Banyan
The one-bedrooms here combine the homey comforts of a condo apartment with the amenities of a hotel. You'll get daily maid service, bellhop service, the assistance of the front desk, and much more, including an enormous sixth-floor recreation deck with a panoramic mountain view, complete with sauna, barbecue areas, snack bar, and children's play area -- a great boon for families. Your introduction to this complex is through the open-air lobby with impressive lacquer artwork, hand carved and painted in Hong Kong. All units have a fully equipped full-size kitchen, a breakfast bar that opens to a comfortably furnished living room (with sofa bed), and a separate bedroom with two double beds or a king. The one we stayed in had an old-fashioned air conditioner in the wall, but it did the job. Each apartment opens onto a fairly good-size lanai with chairs and a small table; there's a partial ocean view, with some buildings blocking the way.

Aloha B&B
Perched on a hillside in the residential community of Hawaii Kai is this very affordable B&B, complete with swimming pool, panoramic ocean views and continental breakfast on the outdoor lanai. The two bedrooms (one with king bed, one with twins) share a bath and a half (no waiting for the toilet!). Just a 10-minute drive to snorkeling in Hanauma Bay and about a 15-minute drive to Waikiki and downtown Honolulu. Hostess Phyllis Young has lots of beach toys (including coolers and beach chairs) she will loan you for the day. She'll even do a load of laundry for you for $4. No smoking anywhere on the property.
