Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)
MOCA boasts an impressive collection of internationally acclaimed art with a local flavor. It is also known for its forward thinking and ability to discover and highlight new artists. Tour-goers meet for a 1 1/2-hour walk through some of America's most exuberantly "architectured" buildings. The league led the fight to designate this area a National Historic District and is proud to share the splendid locale with visitors.
Fast Cats Ferry Service
Finally, a ferry that goes from Miami to Key West. It's about time. The PurrSeavearance may be a cheesy name for a luxury $7.5 million catamaran, but the trip is hardly so. The 102-foot boat can hold up to 149 passengers and will make the 4-hour cruise (driving only takes 3 hr., but with traffic it can take up to 5) four times a week starting at $69 each way. VIP tickets cost $98 and include preferential seating. Food and alcoholic beverages are available but not included in the price.
Hotel Inter-Continental Miami
This hotel presents a serious catch-22: It's got a front-row view of all of Miami Beach, Biscayne Bay, the Miami River, and the Atlantic Ocean, but it is also located in downtown Miami. If it's a view that you want, then you should stay here; but if you're more interested in location, you may want to reconsider.With the decidedly threatening presence of the hyperluxurious Mandarin Oriental just over the Brickell Bridge, the Inter-Continental had no choice but to keep up with the competition. A $34 million renovation has brought it up to speed, rendering it downtown proper's swankiest hotel. It boasts more marble than the Liberace Museum (both inside and out), but it is warmed by bold colors and a fancified Florida flavor. The five-story lobby features a marble centerpiece sculpture by Henry Moore and is topped by a pleasing skylight. Plenty of plants, palm trees, and eclectic furnishings also add charm and enliven the otherwise stark space. Perfectly designed for business travelers, each room is outfitted with a desk and Internet-ready telephone lines, but is not fabulous. They're really just swankier versions of the rooms in a typical chain hotel, albeit a little more froufrou and elaborate, with marble bathrooms, upholstered seating areas, and sit-in windowsills. Some suites have fully equipped kitchenettes. Guests who stay in the Inter-Continental are big fish in the very small sea of desolate downtown Miami, but don't worry about your safety -- this hotel is extremely secure. Note: Construction on several new condominiums adjacent to the Inter-Continental may disturb the deafening silence common to downtown Miami.Facilities: 3 restaurants; 2 lounges; Olympic-size outdoor heated pool; access to nearby golf course; spa; concierge; tour desk; car-rental desk; large business center; shopping arcade; salon and barbershop; 24-hr. room service; coin-op washers and dryers; 24-hr. laundry and dry-cleaning service.
Raleigh Hotel
Upon entering the lobby of this oceanfront Art Deco hotel, you will feel like you've stepped back into the 1940s. Polished wood, original terrazzo floors, and an intimate martini bar add to the fabulous atmosphere that's favored by fashion photographers and production crews, for whom the hotel's fleur-de-lis pool is the favorite subject. In fact, one look at the pool and you'll expect Esther Williams to splash up in a dramatic, aquatic plié. Should you glance quickly inside the dimly lit lobby restaurant, helmed by Eric Ripert of NYC's Le Bernardin fame whose title is "directeur de cuisine" and whose on-site chef, Keith Harry of NYC's Butter, will be providing hearty, fattening fare like chicken stuffed with chorizo and truffle fries, you could swear Dorothy Parker and her fellow round-tablers took a detour from New York's Algonquin Hotel and landed here. Rooms are tidy and efficient (those overlooking the resplendent pool and ocean are the most peaceful), nothing too elaborate, but that's not why people stay here. It's the Raleigh's romantic Deco lure that has people skipping over from the chilly, antiseptic Delano a few blocks up for much needed warmth. And soon, you can expect the Raleigh to be even hotter -- at press time, hip hotelier Andre Balazs (of Los Angeles's Chateau Marmont and Standard hotels fame), the high profile, new owner of the Raleigh, started implementing extensive renovations that will undoubtedly push the hotel back in the limelight as one of the places to be on South Beach yet again. At press time, a Sunday afternoon pool party known as Soiree Sunday, from noon until 10pm, has seen the likes of Balazs' girlfriend Uma Thurman, tennis tart Anna Kournikova, actor Mickey Rourke, and just about every hipster who has ever entered the 33139 zip code.
Essex House Hotel and Suites
The Essex House Hotel was created by Deco pioneer Henry Hohauser in 1938 and has received numerous awards for its authentic restoration. The hotel's whimsically created ship-like architecture rises from the shore with decks that are designed to take in succulent ocean breezes. The sleek Bauhaus interiors add to the distinct charm of the place. All suites feature solid-oak furnishings and have a fridge, wet bar, and Jacuzzi. Although the hotel is right on the pulse of South Beach's constant activity, the new double-glazed, sound-absorbing windows provide an acoustical barrier to the street noise. A spa pool graces the south patio and gardens. In an area where the infamous Al Capone used to play cards, there is now an intimate dining area where complimentary breakfast is served and evening cocktails can be enjoyed. Unlike most hotels in the area, the Essex House is not a boutique hotel, so if you're looking for a scene, go elsewhere.
