During your Washington vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Korean War Veterans Memorial
This privately funded memorial, founded in 1995, honors those who served in Korea, a 3-year conflict (1950-53) that produced almost as many casualties as Vietnam. It consists of a circular "Pool of Remembrance" in a grove of trees and a triangular "Field of Service," highlighted by lifelike statues of 19 infantrymen, who appear to be trudging across fields. In addition, a 164-foot-long black-granite wall depicts the array of combat and support troops that served in Korea (nurses, chaplains, airmen, gunners, mechanics, cooks, and others); a raised granite curb lists the 22 nations that contributed to the U.N.'s effort there; and a commemorative area honors KIAs, MIAs, and POWs. Plan to spend 15 minutes for viewing. Limited parking is available along Ohio Drive.Tip: If you don't mind a walk, try to snag a parking spot along West Basin Drive near the FDR Memorial; the Korean War and the Vietnam War Veterans memorials, as well as the Lincoln Memorial, are then all within reach.

Newseum & Freedom Park
The Newseum opened in 1997 as the world's first museum dedicated exclusively to news, it's been such a hit that it's already outgrown its location. This location is closed, and a new, larger, and higher-profile headquarters is under construction at 6th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just off the Mall, though it won't open until 2006. You can visit Freedom Park and the Freedom Forum Journalists Memorial, however.Adjoining the museum, Freedom Park, which opened in the summer of 1996 and sits atop a never-used elevated highway, celebrates the spirit of freedom and the struggle to preserve it. Here, too, are many intriguing exhibits: segments of the Berlin Wall (the largest display of the wall outside of Germany), stones from the Warsaw Ghetto, a bronze casting of a South African ballot box, a headless statue of Lenin (one of many that were pushed over and beheaded when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991), and a bronze casting of Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birmingham jail-cell door. The glass and steel Freedom Forum Journalists Memorial (honoring, as of 2004, more than 1,528 journalists killed while on assignment; their names are etched in the glass panels) rises above the Potomac, offering views of the Washington Monument, the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, and the National Cathedral.

Arts & Industries Building
The building is closed for (no reopening date given at press time) an extensive renovation, though its children's theater remains open (read below). Completed in 1881 as the first U.S. National Museum, this redbrick and sandstone structure was the scene of President Garfield's Inaugural Ball. (It looks quite similar to the Castle, so don't be confused; from the Mall, the Arts and Industries Building is the one on the left.) From 1976 through the mid-1990s, it housed exhibits from the 1876 U.S. International Exposition in Philadelphia -- a celebration of America's centennial that featured the latest advances in technology.Singers, dancers, puppeteers, and mimes perform in the Discovery Theater (open all year except Aug, with performances weekdays and on selected Sat). Call tel. 202/357-1500 for show times and ticket information; admission of about $5 is charged.Weather permitting, a 19th-century carousel operates across the street, on the Mall.

Courtyard by Marriott Northwest
This hotel isn't much to look at from the outside, but inside it has a European feel and a well-heeled appearance. Crystal chandeliers hang in the lobby and in the restaurant, and you may hear an Irish lilt from time to time (the hotel is one of three in Washington owned by Jurys Doyle Hotel Group, an Irish management company). Guests tend to linger in the comfortable lounge off the lobby, where coffee is available all day.A complete refurbishment in 2004 replaced just about everything in the guest rooms, from TVs to carpeting. Cherry wood furniture, blue carpeting, 25-inch TVs, complimentary high-speed Internet access -- all new. Guest rooms are still very comfortable and bright. Accommodations facing the street on the sixth to ninth floors provide panoramic views. Especially nice are the 16 "executive king" rooms, which are a little larger and are equipped with marble bathrooms, trouser presses, and robes. For the best deals, call direct to the hotel or go to the website.Facilities: Restaurant (American, open for breakfast and dinner); bar; outdoor pool (seasonal); small exercise room; business center; room service (5-10pm); coin-operated laundry; same-day laundry and dry cleaning; 2 rooms for those w/limited mobility, both with roll-in showers. .

Mandarin Oriental Washington, DC
I took the Metro to the Mandarin Oriental, which is easy to do, since the 12th Street exit of the Smithsonian Metro station is only a 5-minute walk from the hotel. The Mandarin does not really cater to Metro-riding guests, however. If you stay at this sumptuous hotel, you're more likely to arrive by car, limo, taxi, or perhaps yacht (the Washington waterfront is behind the hotel, across a roadway or two, but a pedestrian footbridge connects the complex with the marina and Tidal Basin). My point is that the Mandarin Oriental is fabulously posh, but its location is odd. The hotel is situated at the end of a concrete peninsula, known as the multipurpose Portals complex, which is set to include offices, retail shops, and restaurants. The government building neighborhood is not attractive and at night you will not be where the action is: These streets are not meant for strolling.Having said all that, the opening of the Mandarin Oriental in March 2004 upped the ante on luxury in the capital. The service is positively sublime, everyone sweetly gracious. Hotel decor richly combines Asian and American traditions. The two-story lobby is a light-filled, glassed-in rotunda, the circular design used here and throughout the hotel to invite good luck. Each guest room is laid out in accordance with the principles of feng shui (for example, the mirror does not face the entry door, to prevent the reflection of good fortune out of the room), and furnishings include nightstand lamps of contemporary Japanese lantern design, replica pieces from the Smithsonian's Asian art galleries, the Sackler and Freer, and tapestries of hand-woven Thai silk panels. On the thick-mattressed beds are sensuously beautiful linens that make you reach out your hand to touch. Finally, the setting that separates the hotel from the rest of the city also helps create a feeling that you are away, but not away. You may not want to roam the neighborhood but you can walk around the hotel's property, which includes terraces of landscaped gardens and views of the Tidal Basin and marina, the Jefferson Memorial, the Virginia skyline, and District buildings. Guest rooms offer these same views. And when you are on the inside, looking out from the soundproofed, very quiet, and elegant refuge of your room, even nearby Interstate 95 appears rather magnificent.Note: Not open at the time of research, both the restaurant (with a chef coming from the West Coast's acclaimed French Laundry) and the spa are expected to be world-class.Facilities: 2 restaurants (French American, Asian-influenced cafe cuisine); 2 bars; lap pool in spa; fully equipped fitness center; 10,400-sq.-ft. full-service spa; 24-hr. concierge; business center with full Internet access; 24-hour room service; same-day laundry/dry cleaning; club levels; several rooms for those w/limited mobility. In room: A/C, TV w/pay movies and HDTV, 3-line phone w/dataports, minibar, coffeemaker, hair dryer, iron, safe, robes, DVD/CD player, high-speed Internet access ($12 per day).

Capital Hilton
This longtime Washington hotel attracts locals as well as hotel guests to its Capital City Club fitness center and full-service day spa. The club fronts on K Street, so you can work your buns off while watching the downtown Washington scene. The club doesn't have a pool but does have 60 pieces of exercise equipment, from Lifecycle to treadmills; facials, massages, and other spa services; and personal trainers. Use of the club is free to certain Hilton HHonors guests and $10 per day ($25 maximum, no matter how long your stay) for all others. The hotel has hosted every American president since FDR, and the annual Gridiron Club Dinner and political roast takes place in its ballroom. The Hilton's central location (2 blocks from the White House) makes it convenient for tourists, and business travelers appreciate the Tower's concierge floors (10, 11, 12, and 14) and extensive facilities. The rooms are decorated in Federal-period motif with Queen Anne- and Chippendale-style furnishings. Corner rooms on the 16th Street side are the most spacious and offer the best city views. A number of suites are available, including three with outdoor patios. Most of the rooms are on the high end of the price range given below. But always check out the website for best deals. An ongoing promotion is the "Hilton bounce-back" weekend rate, which includes full buffet breakfast for two, and discounts for AAA members, seniors, military, and families.Facilities: 2 restaurants (steakhouse, American); 2 bars; 10,000-sq.-ft. health club and spa; concierge (6:30am-11pm); tour and ticket desk; business center; salon; room service (until 1am); massage; same-day laundry/dry cleaning; concierge floors; 13 rooms for those w/limited mobility; ATM with foreign currency.
