During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Warner Brothers Studios
Warner Brothers offers the most comprehensive -- and the least theme park-like -- of the studio tours. The tour takes visitors on a 2 1/4-hour informational drive-and-walk jaunt around the studio's faux streets. After a brief introductory film, you'll pile into glorified golf carts and cruise past parking spaces marked "Clint Eastwood," "Michael Douglas," and "Sharon Stone," and then walk through active film and television sets such as ER, The Drew Cary Show, and West Wing. Whether it's an orchestra scoring a film or a TV show being taped or edited, you'll get a glimpse of how it's done (nothing is staged for the tour). Stops include the wardrobe department or the mills where sets are made. Whenever possible, you can also visit working sets to watch actors filming actual productions. Reservations are required; children under 8 are not admitted. Bring valid photo ID.

Museum of Tolerance
The Museum of Tolerance is designed to expose prejudices, bigotry, and inhumanity while teaching racial and cultural tolerance. Since its opening in 1993, it's hosted 3.5 million visitors from around the world, including King Hussein of Jordan and the Dalai Lama. It's located in the Simon Wiesenthal Center, an institute founded by the legendary Nazi-hunter. While the Holocaust figures prominently here, this is not just a Jewish museum -- it's an academy that broadly campaigns for a live-and-let-live world. Tolerance is an abstract idea that's hard to display, so most of this $50 million museum's exhibits are high-tech and conceptual in nature. Fast-paced interactive displays are designed to touch the heart as well as the mind, and engage everyone from heads of state to the MTV generation.

Union Station
Union Station, completed in 1939, is one of the finest examples of California mission-style architecture and one of the last of America's great rail stations. It was built with the opulence and attention to detail that characterize 1930s WPA projects. The cathedral-size, richly paneled ticket lobby and waiting area of this fantastic cream-colored structure stand sadly empty most of the time, but the MTA does use Union Station for Blue Line commuter trains. When you're strolling through these grand historic halls, it's easy to imagine the glamorous movie stars who once boarded The City of Los Angeles and The Super Chief to journey back East during the glory days of rail travel; it's also easy to picture the many joyous reunions between returning soldiers and loved ones following the victorious end to World War II, in the station's heyday. Movies shot here include Bugsy and Blade Runner. There's always been a restaurant in the station; the latest to occupy this unusually beautiful setting is Traxx.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Los Angeles area, including:

Huntley Santa Monica Beach
Housed in one of Santa Monica's tallest buildings (18 floors), this business-minded hotel offers reliable, quality accommodations with a style and attitude a notch above your average midrange chain hotel -- plus a great location, close to Third Street Promenade dining and shopping and just a stone's throw from the beach. The guest rooms offer either ocean or mountain views, a good work desk, and bathrooms with Italian marble tile; executive suites also feature terry robes and minibars. The rooftop restaurant and lounge serves "progressive" American cuisine, but the real draw is the ocean view, particularly at sunset; the lounge hosts entertainment nightly. Fun tip: Take a thrilling ride in the oceanside glass elevator (acrophobes will prefer the interior lobby elevators).

New Otani Hotel and Garden
Most of the guest rooms in this anonymous 21-story concrete tower are nothing special -- fine if you score a low weekend rate, not good enough for the money if your rate starts inching to close to $200. The best reason to stay here is to experience one of the handful of wonderfully unique Japanese-style suites, which recreate an elegant Far East hotel room in every detail: futon beds elegantly dressed and laid out on tatami floors, sliding rice-paper shoji screens, ofuro bathrooms with separate showers and soaking tubs, and a prime view of the half-acre rooftop classical tea garden. One- and two-night Japanese Experience cultural packages include suite accommodations, welcome sake, shiatsu massages, dinner, and in-suite breakfast.Even if you opt for a more mundane Western-style room, you can enjoy the beautifully sculpted Japanese Garden; the five restaurants and bars, including Senbazuru (A Thousand Cranes) for Japanese cuisine elegantly presented by kimono-clad servers (go for breakfast for the ultimate culinary adventure), and the Garden Grill for superb teppan yaki steak and seafood; and the terrific Japanese-style Sanwa Spa for shiatsu massages. The location is close enough to the prime business district to be convenient, yet far enough to be peaceful. Little Tokyo dining options are nearby, and Downtown shuttles and free taxi vouchers make exploring easy. Expect a clientele that's split between Japanese and Westerners.Facilities: 2 Japanese restaurants (including a Tokyo-style teppanyaki grill); California-style bar and grill; 2 cocktail lounges; full-service Japanese-style spa (www.sanwahealth.com) w/saunas, baths, and shiatsu massages; fitness center; concierge; tour desk; car-rental desk; courtesy shuttle; business center; shopping arcade; salon; room service (6am-11pm); in-room massage; laundry service; dry-cleaning service; executive-level rooms; Japanese garden.

Omni Los Angeles
The Omni chain forsook its old location (now the Wilshire Grand) to assume this boxy tower at the top of Bunker Hill because, as they say, location is everything: It's adjacent to the Museum of Contemporary Art and within walking distance of the L.A. Music Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, making the Omni Downtown's best base for culture buffs. Recognizing the geographical appeal, the hotel caters to theatergoers more than any of its peers, with complimentary car service until 11:30pm (great for dinner/show evenings), late-night dining during performances, and good-value theater packages. An eager-to-please staff runs the property beautifully, and public areas enjoy a graceful air thanks to elegant accents and artworks from the likes of Jim Dine and David Hockney. The bright, spacious, and conservatively styled rooms are amenity-packed -- 25-inch flat-screen TVs, free wireless Internet access, fluffy robes -- and offer floor-to-ceiling views and oversize bathrooms with separate dressing areas; larger rooms also have a chaise, and business rooms feature an extralarge work desk with halogen task lighting and desk-level inputs (most also have a fax/copier/printer). At $35 extra for two, club-level rooms are a great value considering the accompanying freebies: continental breakfast, all-day beverages and pastries, evening cocktails and appetizers. Another reason to book a room here is the Omni's new flagship restaurant, Noé, which has been garnering high praise from the local press for it progressive American cuisine with Japanese influences. Tip: Request a room overlooking the Walt Disney Concert Hall.Facilities: Restaurant; lounge; outdoor heated lap pool; exercise room w/sauna; access to nearby health club; Omni Kids program; concierge; courtesy car within 3-mile radius; business center w/secretarial services; 24-hr. room service; babysitting; laundry service; dry-cleaning service; executive-level rooms; 24-hr. on-call physician.
