Chapel of St. Ignatius
Lest you think subtlety is a concept unknown to architects commissioned to design contemporary buildings in Seattle, pay a visit to this tasteful little chapel on the campus of Seattle University, a Catholic institution. Designed by architect Steven Holl, the chapel was conceived as "seven bottles of light in a stone box," with each of those bottles of light reflecting an aspect of Catholic worship. The "bottles" are basically ways of channeling light into the chapel, and though the exterior seems rather stark and angular, on the inside, soft light in different colors suffuses the rooms. The chapel is something of an exercise in the ways natural light can be used to illuminate a building, and the overall effect is positively enchanting.

Seattle Asian Art Museum
Housed in a renovated Art Deco building in Volunteer Park, the Asian art collection places an emphasis on Chinese and Japanese art, but also includes works from Korea, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Himalayas. Among the museum's most notable pieces are the Chinese terra-cotta funerary art, Chinese snuff bottles, and Japanese netsukes (belt decorations). One room is devoted to Japanese ceramics, while three rooms are devoted to Chinese ceramics. The central hall contains stone religious sculptures of South Asia (primarily India). The museums hosts frequent lectures and concerts.

Children's Museum
The Children's Museum is located in the basement of the Center House at Seattle Center, which is partly why Seattle Center is such a great place to spend a day with the kids. The museum includes plenty of hands-on cultural exhibits, a child-size neighborhood, a Discovery Bay for toddlers, a mountain wilderness area, a global village, and other special exhibits to keep the little ones busy learning and playing for hours.

Hotel Ändra
Located on the edge of the trendy Belltown neighborhood and only a few of blocks from both downtown shopping and Pike Place Market, this recently opened hotel melds a vintage building with bold contemporary styling and manages to succeed even better than the local W hotel. The lobby scene at the Ändra may not be as trendy as at the W, but check out that cool video artwork over the fireplace mantel! Even the elevators here have plasma TVs, broadcasting CNN. The location, close to lots of good restaurants and happening clubs, makes this a great place to stay if you're in Seattle to make the scene. Rooms are done in cool blues and kelp greens, with lots of wood and stainless-steel accents, Swedish modern furniture, ergonomic desk chairs, faux-fur headboards, retro clocks, and flat-screen TVs. The suites even have wall-hung plasma TVs. Lights are on dimmers, so you can create just the right mood. Oh, and the hotel's restaurant is the newest offering from Tom Douglas, one of my favorite Seattle chefs. Don't miss it.

Fairmont Olympic Hotel
If nothing but classically elegant surroundings will do, then head straight for the Fairmont Olympic Hotel, a gorgeous facsimile of an Italian Renaissance palace. Without a doubt, this hotel has the grandest lobby in Seattle. Gilt-and-crystal chandeliers hang from the arched ceiling, while ornate moldings grace the glowing hand-burnished oak walls and pillars. Although many of the guest rooms tend to be rather small (with either two twin beds or one king bed), all are very elegant. If you crave extra space, opt for one of the suites, of which there are more than 200 (however, be aware that the executive suites aren't much bigger than the hotel's deluxe rooms). The Georgian is the most elegant restaurant in Seattle, with a menu that combines creative Northwest and Continental cuisines. Red Lion Seattle Airport
Located almost directly across from the airport's main entrance, this hotel provides comfortable accommodations designed for business travelers. Guest rooms are generally quite large -- if you need space, this is the place. The hotel backs onto a small lake, but only a few rooms have lake views; try to get one of these.
