During your San Francisco vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Glide Memorial United Methodist Church
There would be nothing special about this Tenderloin-area church if it weren't for its exhilarating lively sermons and accompanying gospel choir. Reverend Cecil Williams's enthusiastic and uplifting preaching and singing with homeless and poor people of the neighborhood attracted nationwide fame over the past 30-plus years. In 1994, during the pastor's 30th-anniversary celebration, singers Angela Bofill and Bobby McFerrin joined comedian Robin Williams, author Maya Angelou, and talk-show queen Oprah Winfrey to honor him publicly. Cecil Williams now shares pastor duties with Douglas Fitch, alternating presiding over the nondogmatic, fun Sunday services in front of a diverse audience that crosses all socioeconomic boundaries. Go for an uplifting experience and some hand-clapping gospel choir music.
Haas-Lilienthal House
Of the city's many gingerbread Victorians, this handsome Queen Anne house is one of the most flamboyant. The 1886 structure features all the architectural frills of the period, including dormer windows, flying cupolas, ornate trim, and winsome turret. The elaborately styled house is now a museum, its rooms fully furnished with period pieces. The Foundation for San Francisco's Architectural Heritage maintains the house and offers docent-led tours. The 1-hour tours (the only way to see the house) start every 20 to 30 minutes.
California Academy of Sciences
Originally clustered around the Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park (in multiple buildings) and intending to return there around 2008 after a complete rebuild, this grouping of outstanding museums is now across from Moscone West, near the Yerba Buena Gardens and Center for the Arts. In its new location the Steinhart Aquarium houses some 5,400 animals, including seahorses, turtles, snakes, and poison dart frogs as well as a two-story 20,000-gallon living coral reef featuring Harlequin Tush fish, Yellow Tangs, sea stars, and a giant clam. Kids love the "touch tide pool" where they can get their mitts on live sea life.An edited version of the Natural History Museum has also been transplanted and hosts changing exhibits such as "Ants: Hidden Worlds Revealed," which shows the insects in action within six different live ant colonies. Some of the museum's permanent displays have moved, too, including Snake Alley, where terrestrial snakes reside; Astrobiology, an exhibit exploring life in extreme environments; and ScienceNOW, which presents a frequently changing display of Academy research, breaking science news, and expeditions around the globe. Toddlers will love the Nature Nest, an education center with hands-on learning activities.Families should look into the Academy's calendar of events, which includes fun kid-friendly festivities such as face-painting, storytelling, animal origami, and exhibit-related stories and demonstrations.
San Francisco Airport North Travelodge
The Travelodge is a good choice for families, mainly because of the hotel's large heated pool. Although new carpets and bedspreads were added in 2001, the rooms are as ordinary as you'd expect from a Travelodge. Still they're comfortable and come with plenty of perks like Showtime and free toll-free and credit card calls. Each junior suite has a microwave and refrigerator. The clincher is the 24-hour complimentary shuttle, which makes the 2-mile trip to the airport in 5 minutes.
Hotel Beresford
The small and friendly sister property of the Hotel Beresford Arms, the seven-floor Hotel Beresford is another good, moderately priced choice near Union Square. Perks are the same: $5 video rentals for the VCR, clock radios, a mishmash of furniture, and stocked fridges. To block out street noise, management recently installed soundproof windows. Everything's well kept and modest renovations over the last year -- paint, wallpaper, and the like -- promise fresh-looking, but very modest surroundings. The on-site White Horse Tavern, an attractive and quaint replica of an old English pub, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and is a favorite for folks who like less trendy hullabaloo with their meal.
The Juliana Hotel
A European-style boutique hotel in the best possible way, the Juliana is hard not to like. Completely renovated in 1996 and again in 2001, rooms are trendy-French, with yellow and pale-blue-striped wallpaper, and candy-striped yellow-and-red upholstered chairs. It's vibrant and cheery, for sure, but not the kind of place where you'd want to nurse a wicked hangover. With coffee available in the lobby in the morning and wine at night (included in the room rate), there's no real reason to leave. Guest rooms and bathrooms can be on the small side, but the junior suites have plenty of space and lovely homey touches.
