Honolulu Zoo
Nobody comes to Hawaii to see an Indian elephant, or African lions and zebras. Right? Wrong. This 43-acre municipal zoo in Waikiki attracts visitors in droves. If you've got kids, allot at least half a day or more. The highlight is the new African Savannah, a 10-acre wild preserve exhibit with more than 40 uncapped African critters roaming around in the open. The zoo also has a rare Hawaiian nene goose, a Hawaiian pig, and mouflon sheep. (Only the goose, an evolved version of the Canadian honker, is considered to be truly Hawaiian; the others are imported from Polynesia, India, and elsewhere.)For a real treat, take the Zoo by Moonlight tour, which offers a rare behind-the-scenes look into the lives of the zoo's nocturnal residents. Tours are offered 2 days before, during, and 2 days after the full moon, from 7 to 9pm; the cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children.

Lyon Arboretum
The Arboretum is closed until further notice. Six-story-tall breadfruit trees . . . yellow orchids no bigger than a bus token . . . ferns with fuzzy buds as big as a human head: Lyon Arboretum is 194 budding acres of botanical wonders. A whole different world opens up to you along the self-guided 20-minute hike through the arboretum to Inspiration Point. You'll pass more than 5,000 exotic tropical plants full of birdsong in this cultivated rainforest (a University of Hawaii research facility) at the head of Manoa Valley. Guided tours for serious plant lovers are offered the first Friday and the third Wednesday of the month at 1pm and the third Saturday at 10am; call tel. 808/988-3177 for schedule and reservations.

Makaha Valley Country Club
This beautiful public course offers three tees to choose from. You can probably play your handicap from the middle tee, so for a challenge, you might want to go for the back tee, still a sporting par-69 for the 6,369 yards. The course presents a few challenges along the way: numerous trees and an abundance of water (especially on the 3rd hole, which has a couple of small lakes right at a 90-degree dogleg, followed by a stand of trees). You might want to get an early tee time, as the afternoons in Makaha Valley can get windy. The last hole is a doozy, a 494-yard, par-5 with two 90-degree turns to get up to the green. Facilities include driving range, practice greens, club rental, and clubhouse with restaurant.

Waikiki Parc
Terrifically located just 100 yards from the beach, this hotel is for people who want a taste of the Halekulani's elegance, grace, and style but at a more reasonable price. It's tucked just behind the Halekulani and is owned and operated by the same company. Budget travelers, take note: This very affordable hotel is located on the quieter side of Waikiki, across the street from the Ala Wai Canal. The 12-story tower has medium-size rooms, most with a double bed plus a single bed (convenient for families) and a lanai with great views of the green mountains. The adjacent 3-story building features studio apartments with kitchenettes (refrigerator, stove, and microwave). Another plus for families is the Nintendo system in every room (available for $7.95/hr.). For guests arriving early or catching a late flight there's a hospitality room (complete with shower) for late checkout, and a luggage-storage area.
