Northwest Seaport/Maritime Heritage Center
Although this marine heritage center at the south end of Lake Union is currently little more than a shipyard for the restoration of four historic ships, it has grand plans for the future. If you're a fan of tall ships and the age of sailing, you can pay a visit to the 1897 schooner Wawona, which is currently under restoration. Also being restored are a 1904 lightship, an 1889 tugboat, and a 1933 salmon troller. Throughout the year, there are folk-music concerts ($10 adults, $7 seniors and children) on the deck of the Wawona (call for details), and on the second Friday of each month, there's a free Chantey Sing from 8 to 10pm.Nearby, at Chandler's Cove, you'll find the gift shop and the few small exhibits of the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society, 901 Fairview Ave. N. (tel. 206/624-3028; www.pugetmaritime.org). The shop and exhibits are open daily from noon to 5pm.
Museum of Flight
Located right next door to Boeing Field, an active airport 15 minutes south of downtown Seattle, this museum will have aviation buffs walking on air. Housed inside the six-story glass-and-steel repository are some of history's most famous planes.To start things off, there's a replica of the Wright brothers' first glider, and from there the collection of planes brings you to the present state of flight. Suspended in the Great Hall are more than 20 planes, including a 1935 DC-3, the first Air Force F-5 supersonic fighter, and the Gossamer Condor, a human-powered airplane. The new Personal Courage Wing houses 28 World War I and World War II fighter planes. You'll see one of the famous Blackbird spy planes, which at one time were the world's fastest jets (you can even sit in the cockpit of one of these babies), as well as a rare World War II Corsair fighter that was rescued from Lake Washington and restored to its original glory. Visitors also get to board a retired British Airways Concorde supersonic airliner that recently went on display here. An exhibit on the U.S. space program features an Apollo command module. Of course, you'll also see plenty of Boeing planes, including a reproduction of Boeing's first plane, which was built in 1916. The museum also incorporates part of Boeing's old wooden factory building from its early years.While any air-and-space museum lets you look at mothballed planes, not many have their own air-traffic control tower and let you watch aircraft taking off and landing at an active airfield. During the summer months, biplane rides are usually offered from in front of the museum.The Museum of Flight Restoration Center (tel. 425/745-5150) is located north of Seattle at Paine Field, which is near the city of Everett. Here you'll see planes in various stages of restoration. The center is open Tuesday through Thursday from 8am to 4pm and Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Call for directions. Paine Field is also where you'll find the Boeing Tour Center. Together, these two make a fascinating half-day outing.
Seattle Center
If you want to keep the kids entertained all day long, head to Seattle Center. This 74-acre cultural center and amusement park stands on the northern edge of downtown at the end of the monorail line. The most visible building at the center is the Space Needle, which provides an outstanding panorama of the city from its observation deck. However, of much more interest to children are the Fun Forest (tel. 206/728-1586; www.funforest.com), with its roller coaster, log flume, merry-go-round, Ferris wheel, arcade games, and minigolf; the Children's Museum ; and Seattle Children's Theatre (tel. 206/441-3322; www.sct.org). This is also Seattle's main festival site, and in the summer months hardly a weekend goes by without some special event filling its grounds. On hot summer days the International Fountain is a great place for kids to keep cool (bring a change of clothes).

Best Western University Tower Hotel
Despite the location away from downtown, this is one of Seattle's hippest hotels and offers excellent value. For these reasons, it's one of my favorite hotels in the city. You'll be surrounded by modern Art Deco style as soon as you arrive, and the retro look is both elegant and playful. You'll even get views of downtown Seattle, distant mountains, and various lakes and waterways. Every room here is a corner unit, which means plenty of space to spread out and plenty of views from the higher floors. Small bathrooms are the biggest drawback. The University Tower Hotel is considerably cheaper than comparable downtown options, and if you need to be near the university, it's definitely the top choice in the neighborhood.
MarQueen Hotel
This Lower Queen Anne hotel is in a renovated 1918 brick building that will appeal to travelers who enjoy lodgings with historic character. Seattle Center, with its many performance venues and kid-oriented attractions, is only 3 blocks away, and from there you can take the monorail into downtown. Although the MarQueen is geared toward business travelers (with lots of high-tech amenities), it's a good choice for vacationers as well. Guest rooms are spacious, though a bit oddly laid out due to the hotel's previous incarnation as an apartment building. Lots of dark-wood trim and hardwood floors give a genuinely old-fashioned feel. Many units have separate little seating areas and full kitchens, which makes this a good choice for families. There's an excellent espresso bar in the hotel building and numerous good restaurants nearby, as well as complimentary wine receptions twice a week in the lobby.
Red Lion Bellvue Inn
The Bellevue Inn is one of the few hotels in the Seattle area that captures the feel of the Northwest in its design and landscaping. The sprawling two-story property is roofed with cedar-shake shingles, while the grounds are lushly planted with rhododendrons, ferns, azaleas, and fir trees. Guest rooms here are quite sophisticated and upscale, with elegant French Country furnishings and decor, and bathrooms offer plenty of counter space. Note that despite the high rack rates listed below, this hotel usually has rooms for far less -- so it's worth checking, even if you're on a budget.
