King's Chapel and Burying Ground
Architect Peter Harrison sent the plans for this Georgian-style building from Newport, Rhode Island, in 1749. Rather than replacing the existing wooden chapel, the granite edifice was constructed around it. Completed in 1754, it was the first Anglican church in Boston. George III sent gifts, as did Queen Anne and William and Mary, who presented the communion table and chancel tablets (still in use today) before the church was even built. The Puritan colonists had little use for the royal religion; after the Revolution, this became the first Unitarian church in the new nation. Today, the church conducts Unitarian Universalist services using the Anglican Book of Common Prayer.The burying ground, on Tremont Street, is the oldest in the city, dating to 1630. Among the scary colonial headstones (winged skulls were a popular decoration) are the graves of John Winthrop, the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony; William Dawes, who rode with Paul Revere; Elizabeth Pain, the model for Hester Prynne in Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter; and Mary Chilton, the first female colonist to step ashore on Plymouth Rock.To continue on the Freedom Trail: Follow the trail back along Tremont Street and turn left onto School Street.

John F. Kennedy National Historic Site
A property of the National Park Service, the 35th president's birthplace has been restored to appear as it did in 1917. The guided ranger-led tour discusses domestic life of the period and the roots of the Kennedy family. If you miss the last guided tour, ask about the self-guided option. One-hour walking tours of the neighborhood start at 12:45pm on weekends. Call ahead to double-check hours, which are set each January.

Boston Public Library
The central branch of the city's library system is an architectural and intellectual monument. The original 1895 building, a National Historic Landmark designed by Charles F. McKim, is an Italian Renaissance-style masterpiece that fairly drips with art. The lobby doors are the work of Daniel Chester French (who also designed the Abraham Lincoln statue in the memorial in Washington, the Minute Man statue in Concord, and the John Harvard statue in Cambridge). The murals are by John Singer Sargent and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, among others. Visit the lovely courtyard or peek at it from a window on the stairs. The adjoining addition, of the same height and material (pink granite), was designed by Philip Johnson and opened in 1972. The lobby holds changing exhibits. Hostelling International-Boston
This hostel near the Berklee College of Music and Symphony Hall caters to students, youth groups, and other travelers in search of comfortable, no-frills lodging. This motel is as close to Fenway Park as you can get without buying a ticket. The outdoor pool makes it particularly attractive to vacationing families. The rooms are of a decent size, and some have microwaves and refrigerators (convenient if you plan to eat some meals in). The location, a busy street in a commercial-residential neighborhood, is convenient to the Back Bay, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, but not all that close to public transit -- a consideration when you're hauling kids through the summer heat. During baseball season, guests contend with crowded sidewalks and the raucous Red Sox fans who flood the area.
