During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Blue Hills Trailside Museum
This museum at the 7,500-acre Blue Hills Reservation recreation area is fun for all ages and especially popular with the under-10 set. The museum is at the foot of Great Blue Hill, a 20-minute drive south of Boston. Here you'll see replicas of the natural habitats found in the area, displays about the Native Americans who once lived here, and live animal exhibits. Resident animals include owls, honeybees, otters, foxes, snakes, and turtles. Children can feed the ducks, deer, and turkeys. Other activities include hiking and climbing the lookout tower. On weekends, there's story time at 11am and natural-history programs at 1 and 2pm. Special events and family programs change with the seasons; call ahead to register.
Boston Public Library
The central branch of the city's library system is an architectural and intellectual monument. The original 1895 building, a National Historic Landmark designed by Charles F. McKim, is an Italian Renaissance-style masterpiece that fairly drips with art. The lobby doors are the work of Daniel Chester French (who also designed the Abraham Lincoln statue in the memorial in Washington, the Minute Man statue in Concord, and the John Harvard statue in Cambridge). The murals are by John Singer Sargent and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, among others. Visit the lovely courtyard or peek at it from a window on the stairs. The adjoining addition, of the same height and material (pink granite), was designed by Philip Johnson and opened in 1972. The lobby holds changing exhibits. Novel serves lunch and afternoon tea Monday through Friday, and Sebastian's Map Room Café is open for snacks 9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday.Free Art & Architecture Tours (www.bpl.org/guides/tours.htm) begin Monday at 2:30pm, Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm, Friday and Saturday at 11am, with an additional tour October through May on Sunday at 2pm. Call tel. 617/536-5400, ext. 2216, to arrange group tours.
Old North Church
Officially named Christ Church, this is the oldest church building in Boston (1723). The building is in the style of Sir Christopher Wren. In the original steeple, sexton Robert Newman hung two lanterns on the night of April 18, 1775, to signal Paul Revere that British troops were setting out for Lexington and Concord in boats across the Charles River, not on foot ("One if by land, and two if by sea"). The steeple fell in hurricanes in 1804 and 1954; the current version is an exact copy of the original. The 190-foot spire, long a reference point for sailors, appears on navigational charts to this day. And how's this for a coincidence: Newman was a great-grandson of George Burroughs, one of the victims of the Salem witch trials of 1692.Members of the Revere family attended this church (a plaque is on pew 54); famous visitors have included Presidents James Monroe, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Gerald R. Ford, and Queen Elizabeth II. There are markers and plaques throughout; note the bust of George Washington, reputedly the first memorial to the first president. The gardens on the north side of the church (dotted with more plaques) are open to the public. On the south side of the church, volunteers maintain an 18th-century garden. Proceeds from the quirky gift shop and museum go to support the church.Free tours of the church begin every 15 minutes. The 50-minute behind-the-scenes tour ($8 adults, $5 children under 17) includes visits to the steeple and the crypt. Tours are available on weekdays and on weekend afternoons from June to mid-August, and the rest of the year by appointment. Reservations are recommended. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Cross Salem Street onto Hull Street, and walk uphill toward Copp's Hill Burying Ground. On the left you'll pass 44 Hull St., a private residence that's the narrowest (10 ft. wide) house in Boston.
Langham Hotel Boston
Housed in the former Le Meridien Boston, this is one of the best business hotels in the city, and it is the closest hotel to the Financial District. Vacationing visitors, who take advantage of the excellent weekend rates, are near the waterfront and downtown attractions but are not all that close to public transit.Langham, a Hong Kong-based chain of luxury hotels with properties in England and the Pacific, acquired this, its first North American property, in 2004. Elegantly decorated and large enough to hold a generous work area, the guest rooms have 153 configurations, including loft suites with two bathrooms. A glass mansard roof surrounds the top three stories, where a number of rooms have large sloped windows and excellent views. Buildings envelop the hotel on three sides, so the most desirable rooms are on the side that faces the park in Post Office Square. The imposing nine-story building, designed by R. Clipston Sturgis in 1922 in the style of a 16th-century Roman palace, originally housed the Federal Reserve Bank.Facilities: Restaurant (French); cafe with Sun jazz brunch and Sat "Chocolate Bar Buffet" (Sept-May); bar with live piano most nights; 40-ft. indoor pool; well-equipped health club; concierge; weekend courtesy car to Newbury St.; staffed business center with library; 24-hr. room service; in-room massage; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning. Rooms for travelers with disabilities are available.
Holiday Inn Boston Brookline
Just 15 minutes from downtown Boston on the subway, this six-story hotel is more than just another Holiday Inn. In a mostly residential area not far from the Longwood Medical Area, it offers up-to-date accommodations at lower prices than more centrally located hotels. Many guests are visiting the nearby hospitals and Boston University. The recently redecorated rooms are large and well appointed, with oversize work desks. Units at the front of the building have more interesting views, though they may be slightly noisier because of busy trolley route below. The bustling Coolidge Corner neighborhood is a 10-minute walk away.
Eliot Hotel
This exquisite hotel combines the flavor of Yankee Boston with European-style service and abundant amenities. On tree-lined Commonwealth Avenue, it feels more like a classy apartment building than a hotel, with a romantic atmosphere and top-notch business features. Every unit is a spacious suite with antique furnishings, down comforters, and authentic botanical prints. French doors separate the living rooms and bedrooms, and bathrooms are outfitted in Italian marble. Many suites have a pantry with a microwave. The 1925 building is near Boston University and MIT (across the river), and the location contrasts pleasantly with the bustle of Newbury Street, a block away.
