Tail o' the Pup
At first glance, you might not think twice about this hot dog-shape bit of kitsch just across from the Beverly Center. But locals adored this closet-size wiener dispensary so much that when it was threatened by the developer's bulldozer, they spoke out en masse to save it. One of the last remaining examples of 1950s representational architecture, the "little dog that could" serves up an "only in L.A." experience to go with its great Baseball Special.

Walt Disney Concert Hall
The strikingly beautiful Walt Disney Concert Hall isn't just the new home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic; it's a key element in an urban revitalization effort now underway Downtown. The Walt Disney family insisted on the best and, with an initial gift of $50 million to build a world-class performance venue, that's what they got: A masterpiece of design by world-renown architect Frank Gehry, and an acoustical quality that equals or surpasses the best concert halls in the world. Similar to Gehry's most famous architectural masterpiece, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the concert hall's dramatic stainless-steel exterior consists of a series of undulating curved surfaces that partially envelop the entire building, presenting multiple glimmering facades to the surrounding neighborhood. Within is a dazzling 2,273-seat auditorium replete with curved woods and a dazzling array of organ pipes (also designed by Gehry), as well as a Joachim Splichal's Patina restaurant, the hip Concert Hall Cafe, a bookstore, and a gift shop.The 3 1/2-acre Concert Hall is open to the public for viewing, but to witness it in its full glory, do whatever it takes to attend a concert by the world-class Los Angeles Philharmonic. Also highly recommended are the $10 audio tours, which lead visitors through the Concert Hall's history from conception to creation. The 45-minute self-guided tour is narrated by actor John Lithgow and includes interviews with Frank Gehry, Los Angeles Philharmonic music director Esa-Pekka Salonen, and acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, among others. One big caveat is that you see just about everything except the auditorium: There's almost always a rehearsal in progress and the acoustics are so good that there's no discreet way to sneak a peak. The audio tours are available on nonmatinee days from 9am to 3pm and matinee days from 9am to 10:30am.

Sunset Boulevard & The Sunset Strip
Unless you were raised in a cave, you've undoubtedly heard of L.A.'s Sunset Boulevard. The most famous of the city's many legendary boulevards, it winds dozens of miles over prime real estate as it travels from Downtown to the beach, taking its travelers on both a historic and microcosmic journey that defines Los Angeles as a whole -- from tacky strip malls and historic movie studios to infamous strip clubs and some of the most coveted zip codes on earth. In fact, driving the stretch from U.S. 101 to the Pacific should be a prerequisite for all first-time visitors because it provides so perfectly what L.A. is all about: instant gratification.Bam! The tour continues with The Comedy Store, where Rosanne, Robin Williams, and David Letterman rose to stardom; Dan Aykroyd's ramshackle House of Blues, where the rock stars still show up for an impromptu show; Tower Records, the largest record store in the world; the Argyle Hotel, where Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and John Wayne once lived; the ultra-exclusive Skybar within the Mondrian hotel; Johnny Depp's Viper Room, where River Phoenix overdosed in 1993; Whisky A Go-Go, where The Doors were once a house band; and the Rainbow Bar & Grill, where Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Marley became legends.Once you emerge from the strip, things calm down considerably as you drive through the tony neighborhoods of Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Brentwood, and Pacific Palisades. Hotel Shangri-La
Perched on Ocean Avenue overlooking the Pacific, the seven-story Shangri-La is in a great location -- a high-rent residential neighborhood just 2 blocks from Third Street Promenade shopping and dining. Built in 1939, the hotel has a timelessly sophisticated Art Deco facade with interior trimmings to match. Okay, so the furnishings are far from L.A.-chic and the hotel is decidedly low-tech, but considering the location, size, and comfort of these rooms -- not to mention the free parking -- the Shangri-La is a very good deal, and the management is constantly making improvements. Guest rooms, which are mostly studio suites (most with kitchenettes, all with fridges), are extremely spacious, and most offer unencumbered ocean views. Bathrooms are small and simple but clean. The two-bedroom/two-bathroom suites are a bargain for large families. Just across the street is a gorgeous stretch of Palisades Park, which overlooks the beach and offers the coast's finest sunset views.

Luxe Summit Hotel Bel-Air
Hidden away on 7 garden acres just a stone's throw from the Getty Center and busy Interstate 405, this low-rise hotel is composed of two levels: The lobby and public areas -- plus some rooms -- are in the main building, while the most secluded guest rooms (and the Romanesque swimming pool) are uphill on the Garden level. Guest rooms are huge and come with stylish Gap-inspired fabrics in a sand-and-khaki color scheme; most have a large balcony or patio. This Luxe appeals equally to business clientele, who appreciate the extensive amenities, and to leisure travelers, who can relax in the open, green setting. A free shuttle lets guests avoid the parking hassles at the Getty Center. The hotel is popular for wedding receptions on weekends, and the full-service spa attracts a sizable local clientele, so be prepared for lots of lobby traffic. With their bright Matisse-style interiors and cushy IKEA-ish furniture, the wonderful apartment-like suites are colorful, modern, and amenity laden: Goodies run the gamut from comfy robes, multiple TVs, and CD players to full gourmet kitchens stocked with Wolfgang Puck microwavable pizzas, Häagen-Dazs pints, and bottles of California Merlot. The enormous size of the suites -- even the studios are huge -- makes the Oceana terrific for families or shares. Oceanview suites feature balconies and two-person whirlpool tubs in the mammoth bathrooms, but don't feel the need to stretch your budget for a view, as all units sit garden-style around the courtyard with its cushiony chaises and boomerang-shape pool.
