During your San Francisco vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Octagon House
This unusual, eight-sided, cupola-topped house of interest to architecture buffs dates from 1861 and is maintained by the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. The architectural features are extraordinary, and from the second floor it is possible to look up into the cupola, which is illuminated at night. In the small museum, you'll find Early American furniture, portraits, silver, pewter, looking glasses, and English and Chinese ceramics. There are also some historic documents, including signatures of 54 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Even if you're not able to visit the inside, this strange structure is worth a look.
Ferry Building Marketplace (and Farmers' Market)
There's no better way to enjoy a San Francisco morning than strolling this gourmet marketplace in the newly renovated Ferry Building and snacking your way through breakfast or lunch. Tasty tenants, open daily, include many of the best of Northern California's gourmet bounty: Cowgirl Creamery's Artisan Cheese Shop, Recchiuti Confections (amazing!), Scharffen Berger Chocolate, Acme breads, Wine Country's gourmet diner Taylor's Refresher, famed Vietnamese restaurant The Slanted Door, and myriad other restaurants, eateries, and wine bars.An added bonus and San Francisco favorite is the Farmers' Market, which is open alfresco on Saturdays from 8am to 2pm and Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 2pm. Drop by to peruse stands hawking the finest Northern California fruits, vegetables, breads, dairy, flowers, and readymade snacks by a few local restaurants. You can also pick up locally made vinegars and oils -- they make wonderful gifts. Drop in on Sunday from 8am to 2pm for the gardener's market, which focuses on plants but also has a bit of produce. Even when the market's closed, the glistening Ferry Building is now a worthy stop thanks to its new restaurants and shops.
Asian Art Museum
Reopened in its Civic Center home in March 2003, the Asian Art Museum is one of the Western world's largest museums devoted to Asian art. Its collection boasts more than 15,000 art objects, such as world-class sculptures, paintings, bronzes, ceramics, and jade items, spanning 6,000 years of history and regions of south Asia, west Asia, Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, China, Korea, and Japan. Previously in Golden Gate Park, the museum's new home in the city's Beaux Arts-style central library was renovated under Italian architect Gae Aulenti and includes 40,000 square feet of gallery space showcasing 2,500 objects at any given time. Add temporary exhibitions, live demonstrations, learning activities, cafe Asia, and a store, and you've got one very good reason to head to the Civic Center.
Hostelling International San Francisco--Fisherman's Wharf
Unbelievable but true -- you can get front-row bay views for a mere $22 nightly. This hostel, on national park property, provides dorm-style accommodations and offers easy access to the Marina's shops and restaurants. Rooms sleep 2 to 12 people; communal space includes a fireplace, kitchen, dining room, coffee bar, and foosball. The breakfast alone practically makes it worth the price. Make reservations well in advance.
The Donatello
If you're not looking for trendy lodgings or an anonymous business hotel but want old-world elegance, book a room here. The Donatello is, in a word, dignified. The lobby is classy, with Italian marble and a serious staff. The rooms, which are some of the largest in the city (an average of 425 sq. ft.!), are airy, updated classic European and even better than before, since they were completely redecorated in 2000 with contemporary French antiques, stripes, tapestries, original art, king-size mattresses, and textiles. Thankfully, the face-lift didn't include going the trendy bold-and-colorful route, which seems to be infectious among downtown hotels. Unfortunately, most of the extralarge windows lack great views, but if it's fresh air you're after, the fifth floor has seven terrace rooms.
The Monticello Inn
Federal-style decor, Chippendale furnishings, grandfather clocks, Revolutionary War paintings, a brass-mantled fireplace, and other old stuff scattered around the lobby (renovated in 2002) attempt to create a colonial milieu. Although it makes for a pleasant entrance, the period effect doesn't follow through to the comfortable, spacious rooms, which were completely renovated in 2004 with new textiles, carpet, striped white and light blue wallpaper, and mattresses. Despite the homely air conditioners in the walls, you'll be quite content here, especially considering the extras -- umbrellas, voice mail, and a morning ride to the Financial District. The service is wonderful and the downtown location is primo. The adjoining Puccini & Pinetti restaurant features modern Italian cuisine.
