During your Seattle vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Kubota Garden
Located in South Seattle in a working-class neighborhood not far from the shores of Lake Washington, this 20-acre Japanese-style garden was the life's work of garden designer Fujitaro Kubota. Today the gardens are a city park, and the mature landscaping and hilly setting make this the most impressive and enjoyable Japanese garden in the Seattle area. Kubota began work on this garden in 1927, and over the years built a necklace of ponds, a traditional stroll garden, and a mountainside garden complete with waterfalls. A tall, arched moon bridge is a highlight. The self-taught Kubota went on to design gardens at Seattle University and at the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island. Between April and October, free tours of the gardens are offered at 10am on the fourth Saturday of the month.

Japanese Garden
Situated on 3 1/2 acres of land, the Japanese Garden is a perfect little world unto itself, with babbling brooks, a lake rimmed with Japanese irises and filled with colorful koi (Japanese carp), and a cherry orchard (for spring color). A special tea garden encloses a teahouse, where on the third Saturday of each month between April and October, you can attend a traditional tea ceremony ($10). Unfortunately, noise from a nearby road can be distracting.

Chapel of St. Ignatius
Lest you think subtlety is a concept unknown to architects commissioned to design contemporary buildings in Seattle, pay a visit to this tasteful little chapel on the campus of Seattle University, a Catholic institution. Designed by architect Steven Holl, the chapel was conceived as "seven bottles of light in a stone box," with each of those bottles of light reflecting an aspect of Catholic worship. The "bottles" are basically ways of channeling light into the chapel, and though the exterior seems rather stark and angular, on the inside, soft light in different colors suffuses the rooms. The chapel is something of an exercise in the ways natural light can be used to illuminate a building, and the overall effect is positively enchanting.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Seattle area, including:

Hotel Ändra
Located on the edge of the trendy Belltown neighborhood and only a few of blocks from both downtown shopping and Pike Place Market, this recently opened hotel melds a vintage building with bold contemporary styling and manages to succeed even better than the local W hotel. The lobby scene at the Ändra may not be as trendy as at the W, but check out that cool video artwork over the fireplace mantel! Even the elevators here have plasma TVs, broadcasting CNN. The location, close to lots of good restaurants and happening clubs, makes this a great place to stay if you're in Seattle to make the scene. Rooms are done in cool blues and kelp greens, with lots of wood and stainless-steel accents, Swedish modern furniture, ergonomic desk chairs, faux-fur headboards, retro clocks, and flat-screen TVs. The suites even have wall-hung plasma TVs. Lights are on dimmers, so you can create just the right mood. Oh, and the hotel's restaurant is the newest offering from Tom Douglas, one of my favorite Seattle chefs. Don't miss it.

Red Lion Seattle Airport
Located almost directly across from the airport's main entrance, this hotel provides comfortable accommodations designed for business travelers. Guest rooms are generally quite large -- if you need space, this is the place. The hotel backs onto a small lake, but only a few rooms have lake views; try to get one of these.

College Inn
Built in 1909 for the Alaska-Yukon Exposition, this Tudor Revival building has loads of character and a great location right across the street from the University of Washington campus. That said, I really only recommend the College Inn for young travelers. All of its rooms have shared bathrooms, and the inn itself, as with many budget accommodations in Europe, is up a couple of steep flights of stairs. If you plan to bring a lot of luggage, this place is not for you. The decor is a bit funky, but the young visitors who tend to find this inn don't seem to mind. Rooms range from tiny to spacious; all have washbasins. Downstairs in the same building are a cafe and a pub. Parking can be a problem here, so this is a good bet for anyone traveling without a car; there's good bus service into downtown.
