During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Kawaiahao Church
In 1842, Kawaiahao Church stood complete at last, the crowning achievement of missionaries and Hawaiians working together for the first time on a common project. Designed by Rev. Hiram Bingham and supervised by Kamehameha III, who ordered his people to help build it, the project took 5 years. Workers quarried 14,000 thousand-pound coral blocks from the offshore reefs and cut timber in the forests for the beams. This proud stone church, complete with bell tower and colonial colonnade, was the first permanent Western house of worship in the islands. It became the church of the Hawaiian royalty and remains in use today by Hawaiians who conduct services in the Hawaiian language (which probably sets old Rev. Bingham spinning in his grave). Some fine portraits of Hawaiian royalty hang inside. We'd recommend the best time to see this edifice is at the Hawaiian-language services, conducted on Sundays at 10:30am.

Ko Olina Golf Club
Golf Digest named this 6,867-yard, par-72 course one of "America's Top 75 Resort Courses" in 1992. The Ted Robinson-designed course has rolling fairways and elevated tee and water features. The signature hole -- the 12th, a par-3 -- has an elevated tee that sits on a rock garden with a cascading waterfall. Wait until you get to the 18th hole, where you'll see and hear water all around you -- seven pools begin on the right side of the fairway and slope down to a lake. A waterfall is on your left off the elevated green. You'll have no choice but to play the left and approach the green over the water. Book in advance; this course is crowded all the time. Facilities include a driving range, locker rooms, Jacuzzi, steam rooms, and a restaurant and bar. Lessons are available.

Puu o Mahuka Heiau
Go around sundown to feel the mana (sacred spirit) of this Hawaiian place. The largest sacrificial temple on Oahu, it's associated with the great Kaopulupulu, who sought peace between Oahu and Kauai. This prescient kahuna predicted that the island would be overrun by strangers from a distant land. In 1794, three of Captain George Vancouver's men of the Daedalus were sacrificed here. In 1819, the year before New England missionaries landed in Hawaii, King Kamehameha II ordered all idols here to be destroyed.A national historic landmark, this 18th-century heiau, known as the "hill of escape," sits on a 5-acre, 300-foot bluff overlooking Waimea Bay and 25 miles of Oahu's wave-lashed North Coast -- all the way to Kaena Point, where the Waianae Range ends in a spirit leap to the other world. The heiau appears as a huge rectangle of rocks twice as big as a football field (170 ft. by 575 ft.), with an altar often covered by the flower and fruit offerings left by native Hawaiians.

Waikiki Joy
Tucked away, down a narrow path on a side street, this hidden jewel offers not only outstanding personal service but also a Bose entertainment system and a Jacuzzi in every room! Complimentary continental breakfast is included in the price. The Italian marble-accented open-air lobby and the tropical veranda set the scene for the beautifully decorated guest rooms, each with a marble entry, tropical island decor, and a lanai wide enough for you to sit and enjoy the views. Another plus: All the rooms are soundproof. The suites are even more luxurious: Club suites have either a king bed or two doubles, a fridge, a microwave, a coffeemaker, and a wet bar, while executive suites come with two double beds and a kitchen with microwave and full fridge; the executive king suites add a separate living room and bedroom. Every unit comes with voice mail, as well as fax and modem hookups. There are, however, a couple of downsides: The beach is 4 or 5 blocks away (a 10-15-min. walk), and although there's a sandwich/coffee shop on-site, the food's nothing to brag about.

Outrigger Reef Hotel
Location, location, location! This Outrigger is right on Waikiki Beach, across from Fort DeRussy, with beautifully appointed rooms, excellent service and a myriad of activities, shops, and restaurants. This is a big hotel with three towers and a megalobby connecting them. Off the lobby is an enormous swimming pool, with some 300 chaise longues surrounding it, three whirlpool spas, and food and cocktail service within hailing distance. Throughout the lobby are enough shops to qualify as a mini-shopping mall. And, of course, beautiful Waikiki is in the back yard. The rooms have the usual well-designed, well-appointed Outrigger furnishings and decorations with great views and plenty of extra room to have a couple of kids bedding down. Blackout drapes are a nice touch for jet-lagged travelers, as is a hospitality room for early check-ins or late checkouts.Facilities: 3 restaurants (including the Shorebird Beach Broiler, an immensely popular oceanside spot offering buffet breakfasts and broil-your-own dinners); 3 bars with Hawaiian entertainment plus poolside sports bar; giant outdoor pool; 24-hr. fitness room; 3 Jacuzzis; children's program; concierge; activity desk; business center (Mon-Fri 8am-4pm); large shopping arcade; salon; room service 7am-10pm; massage; babysitting; coin-op washer/dryers; concierge-level rooms.

Aqua Marina
If you're looking for moderate condominium accommodations within walking distance of the Hawaii Convention Center, yet in Waikiki, you might want to consider this property. This skyscraper complex, which sits back from busy Ala Moana Boulevard, is just 4 blocks from the beach and close to Ala Moana Shopping Center. The rooms were renovated in 1995; views are stunning from the upper floors. The doubles are in the Tower, whose glass elevators offer breathtaking views every time you ride up and down (but with 40 floors and only 2 elevators, the wait for an elevator can challenge your patience); each has a well-equipped kitchenette. The one-bedroom suites are in the 16-story Annex; these have a separate bedroom, living room, lanai, and kitchen. (Mobility-impaired travelers should book in the Tower, as you have to climb a flight of stairs to reach the elevator in the Annex.)There are no restaurants on site, but several are within walking distance. Hot tip for views: In the Tower, the best views are from floors 21 and above; ask for a room facing Ewa (west) for spectacular sunset views.
