During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Oregon History Center
In the middle of the 19th century, the Oregon Territory was a land of promise and plenty. Thousands of hardy individuals set out along the Oregon Trail, crossing a vast and rugged country to reach the fertile valleys of this region. Others came by ship around the Horn. Today the state of Oregon is still luring immigrants, and those who wish to learn about the people who discovered Oregon before them should visit this well-designed museum.Oregon history from before the arrival of the first Europeans to well into the 20th century is chronicled in fascinating educational exhibits. The displays incorporate Native American artifacts, a covered wagon, nautical and surveying instruments, and contemporary objects such as snow skis, dolls, and bicycles. Museum docents, with roots stretching back to the days of the Oregon Trail, are often on hand to answer questions. There's also a research library that includes many journals from early pioneers. You can't miss this complex--look for the eight-story-high trompe l'oeil mural stretching across the front.

The Grotto--National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother
Although this forested 62-acre sanctuary is first and foremost a Catholic religious shrine (with a marble replica of Michelangelo's Pietà set in a shallow rock cave at the foot of a cliff), the gardens are quite beautiful. The gardens are at their best in the early summer and during the Christmas season when the grounds are decorated with thousands of lights and a choral festival is held. An elevator ride to the top of the bluff offers panoramic views of the Cascade Range, the Columbia River, and Mount St. Helens. There are also a couple of chapels on the grounds, a gift shop, and a coffee shop. The Grotto is open to visitors of all faiths.

Museum of the Oregon Territory
This small museum houses collections of historic memorabilia and old photos from this area. There's the obligatory covered wagon, as well as a display of Native American petroglyphs. Your admission ticket to this museum will also get you into the Stevens Crawford House, 603 Sixth St., a foursquare-style home that is furnished with late-19th-century antiques and looks as if the family just stepped out.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Portland area, including:

McMenamins Edgefield
B&Bs don't usually have more than 100 rooms, but this is no ordinary inn. Located 30 minutes east of downtown Portland and ideally situated for exploring the Columbia Gorge and Mount Hood, this flagship of the McMenamin microbrewery empire is the former Multnomah County poor farm. Today the property includes not only tastefully decorated guest rooms with antique furnishings, but a brewery, a pub, a beer garden, a restaurant, a movie theater, a winery, a wine-tasting room, a distillery, a golf course, a cigar bar in an old shed, and extensive gardens. With so much in one spot, this makes a great base for exploring the area. The beautiful grounds give this inn the feel of a remote retreat, though you're still within a short drive of everything Portland has to offer.

Doubletree Hotel Portland Columbia River
Attractive landscaping and an interesting low-rise design that's slightly reminiscent of a Northwest Coast Indian longhouse give this convention hotel a very resortlike feel and have kept it popular for many years. Although rush-hour traffic problems can make this a bad choice if you're here to explore Portland, it's a good location if you plan to visit Mount St. Helens. You're also within walking distance of a large shopping mall. Guest rooms are large, though rather nondescript, but many of them have views of the Columbia River. Be sure to ask for one of these.

The Heathman Lodge
Mountain lodge meets urban chic at this suburban Vancouver hotel adjacent to the Vancouver Mall, and though it's a 20-minute drive to downtown Portland, the hotel is well placed for exploring both the Columbia Gorge and Mount St. Helens. With its log, stone, and cedar-shingle construction, this hotel conjures up the Northwest's historic mountain lodges. As at Timberline Lodge, this hotel is filled with artwork and embellished with rugged Northwest-inspired craftwork, including totem poles, Eskimo kayak frames, and Pendleton blankets. Guest rooms feature a mix of rustic pine and peeled-hickory furniture as well as rawhide lampshades and Pendleton-inspired bedspreads.
