During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Makaha Resort Golf Club
This challenging course -- recently named "The Best Golf Course on Oahu" by Honolulu magazine -- sits some 45 miles west of Honolulu, in Makaha Valley. Designed by William Bell, the par-72, 7,091-yard course meanders toward the ocean before turning and heading into the valley. Sheer volcanic walls tower 1,500 feet above the course, which is surrounded by swaying palm trees and neon-bright bougainvillea; an occasional peacock will even strut across the fairways. The beauty here could make it difficult to keep your mind on the game if it weren't for the course's many challenges: 8 water hazards, 107 bunkers, and frequent brisk winds. This course is packed on weekends, so it's best to try weekdays. Facilities include a pro shop, bag storage, and snack shop.
Mission Houses Museum
This museum tells the dramatic story of cultural change in 19th-century Hawaii. American Protestant missionaries established their headquarters here in 1820. Included in the complex are a visitor center and three historic mission buildings, which have been restored and refurnished to reflect the daily life and work of the missionaries.Insider's tip: The best way to see the museum is as part of a walking tour of historic downtown buildings, offered on Thursday and Friday mornings (museum admission is included in the tour price).
Waimea Falls Park
If you have only a day to spend on Oahu and want to see an ancient hula, sniff tropical flowers, go kayaking along the shore, hike to archaeological sites and a waterfall, and play the games of ancient Hawaii (such as spear throwing and lawn bowling), there's only one place to be: Waimea Falls Park. This is the perfect family place. You can also explore remnants of the old Hawaiian settlements in a scenic 1,800-acre river valley that's full of tropical blooms; watch authentic demonstrations of the ancient hula by the park's own halau (school); and see cliff divers swan-dive into a pool fed by a 45-foot waterfall. Other activities include riding a mountain bike, paddling a kayak, and walking along the Elehaha River into the jungle.
Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the
Honolulu area, including:
Ohana Waikiki West
On the upside, this chain hotel has lots of guest services and facilities, including a lounge, room service, and lots of shops (including a pharmacy). The downside is that it's located on a very noisy part of Kuhio Avenue. The rooms were redone in 1995; all have refrigerators, and some have kitchenettes. Waikiki Beach is 2 blocks away, and restaurants, shopping, and nightlife are all no more than a 10-minute walk. International Market Place is across the street.
The Cabana at Waikiki
Located on a quiet street in Waikiki, this boutique hotel caters to a clientele of gay men, and features exquisitely decorated rooms. Each has a queen bed and pullout sofa bed, entertainment center with VCR and CD player, lanai, and well-equipped kitchenette. A free continental breakfast is served every morning. Free Internet access is available in the lobby. The cabana also has a giant, eight-person spa and is within walking distance of gay nightclubs and the gay scene at Queen's Surf Beach.
Marine Surf Waikiki Hotel
Travelers on a budget will like this hotel. Located in the heart of Waikiki, this high-rise is part privately owned condo units and part spacious studio apartments -- only the studios are available for rent. Each one has a complete kitchen, two extra-long double beds, and a small lanai. The price difference depends on the view. Hot tip: The best views are from floors 17 to 22. Located just a half-block from Kuhio Mall and the International Market Place, the hotel is less than 2 blocks from the beach.
