The Institute of Contemporary Art
Across from the Hynes Convention Center, the ICA mounts rotating exhibits of 20th- and 21st-century art, including painting, sculpture, photography, and video and performance art. Its shows are among the most imaginative around, focusing on everything from baseball to Mexico. The institute also offers films, lectures, musical performances, poetry readings, and educational programs for children and adults. The 1886 building, originally a police station, is a showpiece in its own right.The ICA's profile is on the rise. It's in the process of building a new museum at Fan Pier, on the South Boston waterfront near the federal courthouse. Old Corner Bookstore Building
Built in 1718, this building is on a plot of land that was once home to the religious reformer Anne Hutchinson, who was excommunicated and expelled from Boston in 1638 for heresy. In the middle of the 19th century, the little brick building held the publishing house of Ticknor & Fields, which effectively made this the literary center of America. Publisher James Fields, known as "Jamie," counted among his friends Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. For many years this was the Globe Corner Bookstore (the bookstore is now in Harvard Square). Today the building houses the Boston Globe Store (tel. 617/367-4000), which sells souvenirs and newspaper-related merchandise.To continue on the Freedom Trail: Turn right and walk 1 block.

James Rego Square (Paul Revere Mall)
A pleasant little brick-paved park known as the Prado, the mall holds a famous equestrian statue of Paul Revere. Take time to read some of the tablets on the left-hand wall that describe famous people and places in the history of the North End.To continue on the Freedom Trail: Walk around the fountain and continue to Salem Street.

Boston is about a 15-minute drive or a 30-minute T ride away; Lexington and Concord are less than a half-hour away by car.

A limited-services lodging on a busy street, the Holiday Inn Express is a great deal. It's comfortable and convenient -- just a 5-minute walk from the Green Line -- which makes it perfect for businesspeople on tight budgets as well as vacationers. Each decent-size room has a fridge and a microwave, making this a good choice for families who plan to eat some meals in. The eight-story building sits slightly back from the street, but you'll still want to be as high up as possible to get away from traffic noise. If you're willing to do without a restaurant, business center, or exercise facility, you'll probably find that the reasonable rates, which include parking -- a big plus in Cambridge -- more than make up for the lack of extras.

Harvard Square Hotel
Smack in the middle of "the Square," this six-story brick hotel is a favorite with visiting parents and budget-conscious business travelers. The lobby and the unpretentious guest rooms were renovated in 2003. They're relatively small but comfortable and neatly decorated in contemporary style; some overlook Harvard Square.
