During your Baltimore vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Federal Hill
It's that big hill that overlooks the Inner Harbor. Take the 100 steps on the Battery Avenue side, the east side; or enter from Warren Avenue on the south side, and you won't have any steps to contend with at all, except maybe a curbstone. The hill has been valued for its scenic views since the first Baltimoreans came here to watch construction around the harbor. A single black cannon recalls the Civil War when federal guns were trained on this city. Take your dog (on a leash) or take your children. Once they get tired of the view, they can play in the fenced-in playground.

Irish Shrine at Lemmon Street
The B&O Railroad Museum may be closed for repair, but this new museum takes visitors to the family homes of the men who built the engines down on Pratt Street. Just two brick rowhouses on a narrow street still populated by everyday Baltimoreans, the houses are furnished as they might have been when the families lived there in the 1840s. These streets were home to many Irish immigrants and their families in those days. The tour is self-guided, but the organizations sponsoring this museum also offer an occasional tour of the neighborhood, including a church and neighborhood market. Call tel. 410/669-8154 for a free reservation.

Old St. Paul's Church
Originally founded in 1692 as one of Maryland's first Anglican parishes, this building dates to 1856. The church was built in Italian Romanesque style and is filled with Tiffany stained-glass windows and mosaics. A brochure outlining some of the treasures is available in the back of the church. The Tiffany rose window, which crowns the entrance, is a jewel many people miss. In addition, two friezes salvaged from the previous church, which burned in 1817, have been incorporated into the portico. In addition to Sunday services, the church is the site of a Tuesday noontime music series October through May.

Days Inn Inner Harbor
If you're willing to give up proximity to the harbor (by 2 or 3 blocks), you can get a great deal at this modern nine-story hotel. And if the stadium or convention center are in your plans, they are practically neighbors. It's got a great setup for business travelers, including "work zone" rooms that offer large desks, a kitchenette, and plenty of room. But they all have the comfort you expect from this chain. It's between the First Mariner Arena and convention center, and 3 blocks from Camden Yards. Guest rooms offer standard chain-motel furnishings. A fitness center was added in 2003.

Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel
The Marriott dominates a prime piece of waterfront -- even though it's more than a few steps from the city's best-known attractions and the convention center. Luckily, the water taxi stops nearby. The hotel rises 32 floors in a developing area known as Harbor East. The rooms are pretty standard, with the added pleasures of down duvets and soft, pillow-top mattresses -- and, of course, that skyline view. The best views are from the 30th, 31st, and 32nd floors, and they come with a premium price. These concierge rooms have all the standard amenities plus deluxe continental breakfast and hors d'oeuvres and cocktails in the Concierge Lounge. Corner rooms offer two views of the city and cost extra. For children, the hotel offers cribs and rollaway beds at no charge and a kids' menu in the restaurants.

Inn at the Colonnade
If your Baltimore visit will take you to the northern reaches of the city, to Johns Hopkins University (which is right across the street), or the Baltimore Museum of Art, or to visit friends in Homeland or Roland Park, this is a good choice. Sleek and elegant, the inn offers comfortable rooms, furnished in a Biedermeier style and plenty of amenities. The parking is a bit tricky, and you'd do best to pull up and let the valet park your car.
