During your Nashville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Travellers Rest Historic House Museum
Built in 1799, Travellers Rest, as its name implies, once offered gracious Southern hospitality to travelers passing through a land that had only recently been settled. Judge John Overton (who, along with Andrew Jackson and Gen. James Winchester, founded the city of Memphis) built Travellers Rest. Overton also served as a political advisor to Jackson when he ran for president. Among the period furnishings you'll see in this restored Federal-style farmhouse is the state's largest public collection of pre-1840 Tennessee-made furniture. Allow an hour to tour the museum, and more if you want to wander the grounds and outbuildings.

Nashville Zoo at Grassmere
This 200-acre park just south of downtown is in the midst of an expansion. In the naturalistic habitats, you'll see river otters, bison, elk, black bear, gray wolves, bald eagles, and cougars, as well as other smaller animals. In the park's aviary, you can walk among many of the state's songbirds, and at the Cumberland River exhibit expect to see fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Allow 2 to 3 hours.

Belle Meade Plantation
Belle Meade was built in 1853 after this plantation had become famous as a stud farm that produced some of the best racehorses in the South. Today, the Greek Revival mansion is the centerpiece of the affluent Belle Meade region of Nashville and is surrounded by 30 acres of manicured lawns and shade trees. A long driveway leads uphill to the mansion, which is fronted by six columns and a wide veranda. Inside, the restored building has been furnished with 19th-century antiques that hint at the elegance and wealth that the Southern gentility enjoyed in the late 1800s.Tours led by costumed guides follow a theme that changes every 3 months (i.e. holidays, aspects of plantation life, etc.). These themed tours provide fascinating glimpses into the lives of the people who once lived at Belle Meade. Also on the grounds are a large carriage house and stable that were built in 1890 and that now house a large collection of antique carriages. During your visit, you can also have a look inside a log cabin, a smokehouse, and a creamery that are here on the grounds. Belle Meade's parklike grounds make it a popular site for festivals throughout the year.In addition, Martha's at the Plantation (tel. 615/353-2828), a simple yet stylish restaurant above the gift shop, is drawing raves for chef Martha Stamp's American/Southern dishes such as chicken salad, crawfish, quiches, and caramel cakes. A best-selling cookbook author, Stamp has also been featured in Southern Living and Victorian magazines, as well as on the TV show Martha Stewart Living. Sunday brunch is among the locals' favorites at Martha's at the Plantation, open daily 11am to 2pm. Allow a full morning or afternoon to soak up everything here.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Nashville area, including:

AmeriSuites-Opryland
This mid-rise hotel is located just off Music Valley Drive and is your most comfortable choice in the area if you aren't willing to splurge on the Opryland Hotel. The biggest drawback here is that there is no restaurant on the premises. Guest rooms are larger than most, and a wall-to-wall refurbishment of the property was expected to begin in late 2003. Rooms can even be a bit cramped unless you opt for a single king bed.

Shoney's Inn-Music Valley
This modern hotel is one of the first lodgings along Music Valley Drive and is within walking distance of the Opryland Hotel. Recent renovations include a new continental breakfast bar and refurbished lobby and lounge. An indoor pool makes this a good choice for an off-season vacation. Five of the 13 suites feature two sleeper-sofas in addition to a king-sized bed, which makes these convenient for families. Small kitchenettes are another bonus. A complimentary airport shuttle is also available.

Sheraton Nashville Downtown
Popular with business travelers and legislators, the Sheraton provides the widest variety of amenities among Nashville's downtown high-rise hotels. The former rooftop restaurant no longer revolves, but the hotel boasts an atrium lobby with glass elevators to shuttle guests up and down the hotel's 28 floors, making for great views of the nearby Tennessee State Capitol. It's also within blocks of both The District, the city's main evening-entertainment area, and the Nashville Convention Center. Guests here have plenty of dining and drinking options and won't have to deal with the crowds and chaos that are found at the nearby Renaissance Nashville Hotel. The north-side rooms overlooking the capitol have the best views and there are club-level rooms with extra amenities for an additional charge. On the mezzanine level, there's a casual restaurant; the lobby has a sunken lounge area.
