During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Diaspora Vibe Art Gallery
This culturally charged art complex is a funky artist hangout and is the home to some of the greatest artworks of Miami's diverse Caribbean, Latin American, and African-American cultures. The gallery has two seasons of shows, often focusing on emerging artists. During the winter, three artists are selected by the gallery to travel to and exhibit their works in Paris. On the last Friday of every month, from May through October, the gallery holds its fabulous cocktail-infused "Final Fridays." A new artist's work is spotlighted inside, while outside in the courtyard are live music performances and readings of poetry and folk tales. Delicious Caribbean cuisine is also served while the who's who of Miami's cognoscenti gather here to recharge their cultural batteries.
Miami Museum of Science and Space Transit Planetarium
The Museum of Science features more than 140 hands-on exhibits that explore the mysteries of the universe. Live demonstrations and collections of rare natural history specimens make a visit here fun and informative. Many of the demos involve audience participation, which can be lots of fun for willing and able kids and adults alike. There is also the Wildlife Center, with more than 175 live reptiles and birds of prey. The adjacent Space Transit Planetarium projects astronomy and laser shows as well as interactive demonstrations of upcoming computer technology and cyberspace features. Call, or visit their website, for a list of upcoming exhibits and laser shows.
The Scott Rakow Youth Center
This center is a hidden treasure on Miami Beach. The two-story facility boasts an ice-skating rink, bowling alleys, a basketball court, gymnasium equipment, and full-time supervision for kids in the fourth grade and up. Call for a complete schedule of organized events. The only drag is that it's not open to adults (except on Sun, family day).
Riviera Court Motel
Besides the Holiday Inn down the road, this family-owned motel is the best discount option in the area. The comfortable and clean two-story property, dating from 1954, has a small pool and is set back from the road, so the rooms are all relatively quiet. Vending machines are the only choice for refreshments, but guests are near many great dining spots. You can also choose to stay in one of the efficiencies, which have fully stocked kitchens. For gossip mavens, this is the place where the prerehabilitated tennis star Jennifer Capriati was busted for drug possession many years ago.
Mercury
This small boutique hotel is located in the fast-rising area known as SoFi, or South of Fifth Street, South Beach's latest recipient of a hipster takeover. The Mercury is an upscale, modern all-suite resort that combines Mediterranean charm with trendy South Beach flair. A member of Design Hotels, a worldwide collection of notable boutique hotels, the Mercury is actually a well-kept secret that's attached to (but not affiliated with) two of the beach's best restaurants, Nemo and Shoji Sushi, which also provides the hotel's room service. A small outdoor heated pool and Jacuzzi are located in a courtyard that's shared with the restaurant (yes, diners can see you swim). Accommodations are ultrastylish, with sleek light-wood furnishings, Belgian cotton bedding, European kitchens, and spacious bathrooms with spa tubs. If you're able to splurge, the penthouse here is hypercool, with wraparound terrace, and massive living and bedroom areas and kitchen. If you're looking to stay in style without the hassle of the South Beach hustle and bustle, this is the place for you.
Miami River Inn
The Miami River Inn, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a quaint country-style hideaway (Miami's only bed-and-breakfast!) consisting of four cottages smack in the middle of downtown Miami. In fact, it's so hidden that most locals don't even know it exists, which only adds to its panache. Every room has hardwood floors and is uniquely furnished with antiques dating from 1908. In one room, you might find a hand painted bathtub, a Singer sewing machine, and an armoire from the turn of the 20th century, restored to perfection. Thirty-eight rooms have private bathrooms -- 4 have a shower only, 6 have a tub only, and 28 have a splendid shower and tub combo. One- and two-bedroom apartments are available as well. In the foyer, you can peruse a library filled with books about old Miami, with histories of this land's former owners: Julia Tuttle, William Brickell, and Henry Flagler. It's close to public transportation, restaurants, and museums, and only 5 minutes from the business district.
