Old State House
Built in 1713, this brick structure served as the seat of the colonial government before the Revolution, and as the state capitol until 1797. on July 18, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was first read to Bostonians from the balcony of this building. In 1789, Pres. George Washington reviewed a parade from here. The exterior decorations are particularly interesting -- the clock was installed in place of a sundial, and the gilded lion and unicorn are reproductions of the original symbols of British rule that were ripped from the facade and burned the day the Declaration of Independence was read.Inside is the Bostonian Society's museum of the city's history. The society was founded in 1881 to save this building, which was badly deteriorated and, incredibly, was about to be sold and shipped to Chicago. Exhibits include an introductory video on the history of the building, a meter that illustrates the proximity of the Blue Line subway (which makes the floor vibrate), and displays that focus on the Revolutionary period and more recent history.To continue on the Freedom Trail: Leave the building, turn left, and walk half a block.

Museum of Science
For the ultimate pain-free educational experience, head to the Museum of Science. The demonstrations, experiments, and interactive displays introduce facts and concepts so effortlessly that everyone winds up learning something. Even if you're skipping the exhibits, try to see a show. If you're making a day of it, buy all your tickets at once -- shows sometimes sell out. Tickets are for sale in person and, subject to a service charge, over the phone and on the Web (www.tickets.mos.org). The Mugar Omni Theater, which shows IMAX movies, is an intense experience, bombarding you with images on a five-story domed screen and digital sound. The engulfing sensations and steep pitch of the seating area will have you hanging on for dear life, whether the film is about Mount Everest, Bengal tigers, or wild chimpanzees. Features change every 4 to 6 months. The Charles Hayden Planetarium takes visitors into space with daily star shows and shows on special topics that change several times a year. On weekends, rock-music laser shows take over. At the entrance is a hands-on astronomy exhibit called Welcome to the Universe.The museum has a terrific gift shop, with toys and games that promote learning without lecturing. The ground-floor Galaxy Cafés have spectacular views of the skyline and river. There's a parking garage on the premises, but it's on a busy street, and entering and exiting can be harrowing; take the T.Gone Fishing--Many fascinating interactive exhibits from the defunct Computer Museum now delight patrons of the Museum of Science. The most popular is the Virtual FishTank, which uses 3-D computer graphics and character-animation software that allows visitors to design their own virtual fish. You can even "build" fish on your home computer (visit www.virtualfishtank.com) and launch them at the museum.

Franklin Park Zoo
The Franklin Park Zoo is becoming more and more enjoyable -- for animals as well as people. From June to September, you can visit the popular, colorful Butterfly Landing enclosure. On the Outback Trail, you can see kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and cockatoos. Serengeti Crossing is home to zebras, ibex, ostriches, and wildebeests. Other installations house cheetahs, lions, snow leopards, and African wild dogs. The African Tropical Forest exhibit is a sprawling complex where you'll see more than 50 species of animals. This is the domain of the Western lowland gorillas, which appear to be roaming free in an approximation of their natural habitat. If you're traveling with animal-mad youngsters, the Children's Zoo is both entertaining and educational.Schedule at least half a day for a visit to the zoo. Franklin Park is 40 minutes from downtown by public transportation, and the walk from the main gate and parking area to the entrance is fairly long, especially for those with little legs.

Across the street from the Prudential Center complex, the Hilton is primarily a top-notch business hotel, but vacationing families also find it convenient and comfortable. The weekend packages, especially during the winter, can be a great deal. A Cambridge House feels almost like a country inn except that it's on a busy stretch of Cambridge's main street (Mass. Ave.), set back from the sidewalk by a lawn. The three-story building is a beautifully restored 1892 Victorian that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The well-maintained rooms vary widely in size; they're warmly decorated with Waverly-Schumacher fabrics and period antiques. Most contain fireplaces and four-poster canopy beds with down comforters.
