During your Denver vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Denver Zoo
More than 750 species of animals (more than 4,000 individuals) live in this spacious zoological park, home to the rare deer-like okapi as well as endangered cheetahs, Komodo dragons, and western lowland gorillas. The newest (and most ambitious) habitat here is Predator Ridge, a re-created African savannah with lions, hyenas, and other African predators, opening along with a new entrance and parking facility in 2004. The exhibit is modeled after a Kenyan preserve, complete with artificial termite mounds that disperse insects for the banded mongoose that live here. The zoo has long been an innovator in re-creating realistic habitats: Bear Mountain, built in 1918, was the first animal exhibit in the United States constructed of simulated concrete rockwork. The zoo is home to the nation's first natural gas-powered train ($1). The electric Safari Shuttle ($2.50 adults, $1.50 children) tours all zoo paths from spring through fall. An especially kid-friendly attraction is the Conversation Carousel ($1), featuring wood-carved renditions of such endangered species as okapi, polar bears, Komodo dragons, and hippos. The Hungry Elephant, a cafeteria with an outdoor eating area, serves full meals, and picnicking is popular, too. Feeding times are posted near the zoo entrance so you can time your visit to see the animals at their most active. Allow from 2 hours to a whole day.

Byers-Evans House
This elaborate Victorian home, built by Rocky Mountain News founding editor William Byers in 1883, has been restored to its appearance of 1912-24, when it was owned by William Gray Evans, son of Colorado's second territorial governor. (The Evans family continued to reside here until 1981.) Guided tours describe the architecture and explain the fascinating lives of these prominent Denver families. There is a gift shop. Allow 45 minutes.

Molly Brown House Museum
Built in 1889 of Colorado rhyolite with sandstone trim, this was the residence of J.J. and Margaret (Molly) Brown from 1894 to 1932. The "unsinkable" Molly Brown became a national heroine in 1912 when the Titanic sank. She took charge of a group of immigrant women in a lifeboat and later raised money for their benefit.Restored to its 1910 appearance, the Molly Brown House has a large collection of early-20th-century furnishings and art objects, many of which belonged to the Brown family. There are also temporary exhibits (recent ones detailed the lives of servants in Brown's day and trends in Victorian undergarments), and a carriage house with a museum store at the rear is open to visitors. The house can be seen on guided tours. Allow 1 hour.

Queen Anne Bed & Breakfast Inn
A favorite of both business travelers and couples, the Queen Anne might be considered the perfect bed-and-breakfast in the perfect home. It consists of two Victorian houses: one built by the well-known architect Frank Edbrooke in 1879, and the other built in 1886. Innkeeper extraordinaire Tom King provides piped-in chamber music, fresh flowers, and fax services. Each of the 10 double rooms in the 1879 Pierce-Tabor House is decorated with period antiques. Three rooms boast original murals: All four walls of the Aspen Room are filled with (what else?) aspen trees; the third-floor Park Room overlooks a park and has a mural depicting the view that visitors would have seen in 1879. Each of the four two-room suites in the adjacent 1886 Roberts house is dedicated to a famous artist (Norman Rockwell, Frederic Remington, John Audubon, and Alexander Calder). The suites have deep soaking tubs, and the Remington suite has a hot tub. Half of the rooms have cable television.Located in the Clements Historic District, the Queen Anne borders downtown Denver and is within easy walking distance of the major attractions. Smoking is not permitted.

Cameron Motel
A small mom-and-pop motel located about 10 minutes from downtown, the Cameron provides a quiet alternative to some of the more expensive chains. Built in the 1940s, the property has been completely renovated. The walls of the average-size rooms are glazed brick; remote-control cable TVs offer 60 channels. Three rooms are equipped with kitchenettes, and some also have dataports. The owners live on-site, and their pride of ownership shows.

The Warwick
One of four Warwicks in the United States (the others are in New York, San Francisco, and Seattle), this handsome midsize choice boasts an exterior and rooms reminiscent of hotels in Paris, where the corporate office is located. In contrast, the earth-tone lobby stylishly reflects the region, with classic European design, contemporary Western furnishings, and slate and red-stone stonework. The hotel completed a $20 million renovation in 2000 that updated the property and cemented its status as one of the city's finest.Every room features a full private balcony with a great city view, and most are equipped with a fridge and wet bar. Each has one king- or two queen-size beds, contemporary mahogany furniture, floral prints on the walls, cable TV (with pay-per-view movies), and two incoming phone lines -- as well as wireless high-speed Internet access. There's also a phone in each bathroom. The standard rooms are very spacious, averaging 750 square feet each, and the 42 suites, which range from two-room parlor suites to grand luxury suites, are even more so.
