During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Portland Saturday Market
The Portland Saturday Market (actually held on both Sat-Sun) is arguably the city's single most important and best-loved event. For years the Northwest has attracted artists and craftspeople, and every Saturday and Sunday nearly 300 of them can be found selling their creations here. In addition to the dozens of crafts stalls, you'll find ethnic and unusual foods and lots of free entertainment. This is one of the best places in Portland to shop for one-of-a-kind gifts. The atmosphere is always cheerful and the crowds colorful. Located at the heart of the Skidmore District, Portland Saturday Market makes an excellent starting or finishing point for a walk around Portland's downtown historic neighborhood. Don't miss this unique market. On Sunday, on-street parking is free.

Portland Art Museum
While this relatively small art museum has a respectable collection of European, Asian, and American art, the museum has in recent years been positioning itself as the Northwest stop for touring blockbuster exhibits. Scheduled June 1 to September 22, 2002, is "Splendors of Imperial Japan (Arts of the Meiji Period from the Khalili Collection);" and, from August 17 to December 1, 2002, the museum will be showing "Grandma Moses in the 21st Century." An expansion a couple of years ago added several new galleries and a small sculpture court to the museum. The galleries of Native American art and Northwest art are now the museum's most impressive displays. October through May, on Wednesday nights, the Museum After Hours program presents live music. The adjacent Northwest Film Center is affiliated with the Art Museum and shows an eclectic mix of films.

CM2--Children's Museum 2nd Generation
Located across the parking lot form the Oregon Zoo, this new children's museum opened in mid-2001. With much more space than the old museum, this "second generation" museum includes exhibits for children from age six months to 13 years. Kids can experiment with gravity, act out fairy tales, or explore a magical forest. However, it is the Water Works exhibit that is likely to make the biggest splash with your kids. There area also six studios that will have changing exhibits and opportunities for exploring the visual, literary, and performing arts. Together with the nearby zoo, this museum now makes for an easy all-day kid-oriented outing.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Portland area, including:

The Mark Spencer Hotel
If you're planning an extended stay in Portland and need to be right downtown, this is the place for you. Although the hotel is not in the best neighborhood (there are lots of nightclubs and bars in the vicinity), it's just around the corner from both Powell's City of Books and Jake's Famous Crawfish, one of Portland's oldest and best seafood restaurants. The rooms and suites here have rather dated decor but all have kitchenettes, which is the main draw here for people planning on spending a week or more in town. The hotel offers afternoon tea, and there's also a great rooftop garden deck. The Mark Spencer is a favorite with the casts of touring Broadway shows, and is also a good choice for any gay travelers interested in checking out the nearby bars.

Downtown Portland's Imperial Hotel
Although it doesn't quite live up to its regal name, this remodeled older hotel across the street from the Benson is a good bet for moderately priced accommodations downtown. While the staff may be young and not as polished as those at more expensive hotels, they usually are good about seeing to guests' needs. Rooms are quite up-to-date, and the location can't be beat. The corner king rooms, with large windows, should be your first choice; barring this, at least ask for an exterior room. These might get a little street noise, but they're bigger than the interior rooms and get more sunlight (when the sun shines at all, that is). Free local calls are a nice perk.

Heron Haus
A short walk from the bustling Nob Hill shopping and dining district of northwest Portland, the Heron Haus B&B offers outstanding accommodations, spectacular views, and tranquil surroundings. Surprisingly, the house still features some of the original plumbing. In most places, this would be a liability, but not here, since the plumbing was done by the same man who plumbed Portland's famous Pittock Mansion. Many of that building's unusual bathroom features are to be found at the Heron Haus as well. One shower has two shower heads; another has seven. In another room, there's a modern whirlpool spa that affords excellent views of the city. All the rooms have fireplaces.
