During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Kualoa Ranch and Activity Club
This once-working ranch now has five different adventure packages covering two dozen activities on its 4,000 acres. Activities include horseback riding, mountain-bike riding, shooting a rifle or a .22-caliber handgun, hiking, dune cycling, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, freshwater fishing, and more. We highly recommend the beach activities. You'll be shuttled to Molii fishpond's outermost bank, which is decked out like a country club: hammocks on the beach, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, Ping-Pong tables, and beach pavilions. From here, you can take a 45-foot catamaran to Kaneohe Bay for snorkeling.

Mission Houses Museum
This museum tells the dramatic story of cultural change in 19th-century Hawaii. American Protestant missionaries established their headquarters here in 1820. Included in the complex are a visitor center and three historic mission buildings, which have been restored and refurnished to reflect the daily life and work of the missionaries.Insider's tip: The best way to see the museum is as part of a walking tour of historic downtown buildings, offered on Thursday and Friday mornings (museum admission is included in the tour price).

Mililani Golf Club
This par-72, 6,455-yard public course is home to the Sports Shinko Rainbow Open, where Hawaii's top professionals compete. Located between the Koolau and Waianae mountain ranges on the Leilehua Plateau, this is one of Oahu's most scenic courses, with views of mountains from every hole. Unfortunately, there are also lots of views of trees, especially eucalyptus, Norfolk pine, and coconut palm; it's a lesson in patience to stay on the fairways and away from the trees. The two signature holes, the par-4 number 4 (a classic middle hole with water, flowers, and bunkers) and the par-3 number 12 (a comfortable tee shot over a ravine filled with tropical flowers that jumps to the undulating green with bunkers on each side) are so scenic, you'll forgive the challenges they pose.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Honolulu area, including:

Waikiki Sand Villa
Budget travelers, take note: This very affordable hotel is located on the quieter side of Waikiki, across the street from the Ala Wai Canal. The 12-story tower has medium-size rooms, most with a double bed plus a single bed (convenient for families) and a lanai with great views of the green mountains. The adjacent 3-story building features studio apartments with kitchenettes (refrigerator, stove, and microwave). Another plus for families is the Nintendo system in every room (available for $7.95/hr.). For guests arriving early or catching a late flight there's a hospitality room (complete with shower) for late checkout, and a luggage-storage area.

Radisson Waikiki Prince Kuhio
Formerly the Outrigger's Prince Kuhio, this 37-floor hotel, located just 3 blocks from the beach and a couple of blocks from the zoo, offers pleasantly appointed, midsize rooms furnished in tropical decor, with a lanai, and the all-important black-out drapes so you can sleep in. All of the rooms are the same; the floor and the view determine the price (from the 18th floor and up, the mountain views overlooking the Ala Wai Canal are spectacular, and not as pricey as the oceanview rooms).Facilities: 2 restaurants (Pacific Rim restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner with great buffets and a pool/bar eatery with lunch and dinner); bar; outdoor pool; small fitness room; Jacuzzi; concierge; activity desk; small business center; shopping arcade; limited room service; babysitting; coin-op washer/dryers; laundry service; dry cleaning; concierge-level rooms.

Schrader's Windward Marine Resort
Despite the name, the ambience here is more motel than resort, but Schrader's offers a good alternative for families. The property is nestled in a tranquil, tropical setting on Kaneohe Bay, only a 30-minute drive from Waikiki. The complex is made up of cottage-style motels and a collection of older homes. Cottages contain either a kitchenette with refrigerator and microwave or a full kitchen. There's also a picnic area with barbecue grills. Prices are based on the views; depending on how much you're willing to pay, you can look out over a Kahuluu fishpond, the Koolau Mountains, or Kaneohe Bay. Lots of watersports are available at an additional cost; don't miss the complimentary boat cruise on Wednesday and Saturday. Hot tip: When booking, ask for a unit with a lanai; that way, you'll end up with at least a partial view of the bay.
