During your Kansas City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Thomas Hart Benton Home
From 1939 until he died in his studio in 1975, this 1903, late-Victorian limestone house served as home and studio of Missouri's most renowned 20th-century artist. The house and studio are just as Benton left them, with many personal belongings like clothing, furniture, paints and brushes, and 13 original works, which you can see in about half an hour.
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
Kansas City's premier museum is especially noted for its Asian art, including Tang dynasty bowls and Ming dynasty furniture; an outdoor sculpture garden with the largest U.S. collection of bronzes by Henry Moore; the largest public collection of works by Missouri native Thomas Hart Benton (closed periodically due to an expansion that will increase the museum's size by 71%, slated for completion in 2007); a collection of 17th- and 18th-century European paintings; Impressionist and post-Impressionist pieces; and American art. The museum includes works by Caravaggio, Titian, Rembrandt, Renoir, Monet, Picasso, Gauguin, van Gogh, Andy Warhol, and Willem de Kooning. The airy Rozelle Court Restaurant has extended dinner hours on Friday, with live jazz. Plan on 2 hours or more here.
Arabia Steamboat Museum
This cargo steamboat, laden with 220 tons of merchandise destined for settlers out west, sank in the Missouri River in 1856, where it remained preserved in cold mud until it was excavated in the 1980s. A virtual time capsule of the 1850s and one of the best collections of pre-Civil War artifacts in the world, the museum provides a fascinating look at frontier life, with displays of the steamboat's cargo, from china and hardware to jewelry and leather boots (900 shoes and boots alone are on display). Tours begin with a film of the excavation and restoration of parts of the boat (which are now on display); plan on 1 1/2 hours here.
Westin Crown Center
Connected to the Crown Center with its many shops and restaurants and via walkway to Union Station with its Science City, the Westin incorporates a limestone bluff with a rock garden and 60-foot waterfall in its multilevel lobby. Rooms are endowed with all the comforts, including the Westin's trademark Heavenly Beds (with 250-count sheets and down comforters), tiny balconies, and, on the north side, great views of downtown. The hotel's central location, facilities that include a jogging track and basketball court, and special Heavenly Dog Beds complete with dog dishes, make this a popular choice for families, dog owners -- and conventions.
Hotel Phillips
Built in 1931 and exalting the Art Deco style (it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places), this classic downtown boutique hotel has been updated but retains its original woodwork, marble, lighting, and fixtures -- including an 11-foot-tall gilded goddess overlooking the lobby. Rooms rise above the ordinary with a mix of contemporary furnishings and vintage touches such as plaster molding on the ceilings. If you opt for a standard room, request a brighter, corner room. The hotel is geared toward business travelers, but its historic charm and downtown location make it a good bet for couples as well.
Great Wolf Lodge
Geared towards families with its massive indoor/outdoor waterpark (free for hotel guests), huge game arcade, children's activity room, and laundry facilities, this woods-themed lodge combines the adventure of a rustic retreat with the comfort of an upscale hotel. From the moment guests walk into the four-story grand lobby with its overstuffed sofas, huge stone fireplace, and an animated clock tower that captivates wee ones, this hotel aims for the "wow" factor. Seven styles of suites, all with patio or balcony, are available, including KidCabin Suites that feature a "log cabin" complete with bunk beds. Some suites also have fireplaces and whirlpools.
