During your Denver vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Byers-Evans House
This elaborate Victorian home, built by Rocky Mountain News founding editor William Byers in 1883, has been restored to its appearance of 1912-24, when it was owned by William Gray Evans, son of Colorado's second territorial governor. (The Evans family continued to reside here until 1981.) Guided tours describe the architecture and explain the fascinating lives of these prominent Denver families. There is a gift shop. Allow 45 minutes.
Lakeside Amusement Park
Among the largest amusement parks in the Rocky Mountains, Lakeside has about 40 rides, including a Cyclone roller coaster, a midway with carnival and arcade games, and a rare steam-powered miniature train that circles the lake. There are also food stands and picnic facilities, plus a separate Kiddie's Playland with 15 rides. Allow 3 hours.
Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum
More than 40 planes and spacecraft occupy cavernous Hangar No. 1, which became a museum when Lowry Air Force Base closed in 1995; now it's a burgeoning residential area about 6 miles southeast of downtown. On display are antique biplanes, a search-and-rescue helicopter, an F-14 Tomcat, a massive B-1A bomber -- one of only two in existence -- and most of the F-100 fighter series. You can also see a World War II uniform collection, a Norden bombsight, U3A Blue Canoe, and the Freedom space module, plus seasonal exhibits. On each month's second Saturday the museum hosts "Demo Cockpit Day," when visitors get to climb into the planes' cockpits. Sci-fi fans take note: A full-size X-Wing prop used in the filming of Star Wars is on permanent display. The store is filled with aviation- and space-oriented souvenirs. Allow 1 1/2 hours.
Queen Anne Bed & Breakfast Inn
A favorite of both business travelers and couples, the Queen Anne might be considered the perfect bed-and-breakfast in the perfect home. It consists of two Victorian houses: one built by the well-known architect Frank Edbrooke in 1879, and the other built in 1886. Innkeeper extraordinaire Tom King provides piped-in chamber music, fresh flowers, and fax services. Each of the 10 double rooms in the 1879 Pierce-Tabor House is decorated with period antiques. Three rooms boast original murals: All four walls of the Aspen Room are filled with (what else?) aspen trees; the third-floor Park Room overlooks a park and has a mural depicting the view that visitors would have seen in 1879. Each of the four two-room suites in the adjacent 1886 Roberts house is dedicated to a famous artist (Norman Rockwell, Frederic Remington, John Audubon, and Alexander Calder). The suites have deep soaking tubs, and the Remington suite has a hot tub. Half of the rooms have cable television.Located in the Clements Historic District, the Queen Anne borders downtown Denver and is within easy walking distance of the major attractions. Smoking is not permitted.
The Warwick
One of four Warwicks in the United States (the others are in New York, San Francisco, and Seattle), this handsome midsize choice boasts an exterior and rooms reminiscent of hotels in Paris, where the corporate office is located. In contrast, the earth-tone lobby stylishly reflects the region, with classic European design, contemporary Western furnishings, and slate and red-stone stonework. The hotel completed a $20 million renovation in 2000 that updated the property and cemented its status as one of the city's finest.Every room features a full private balcony with a great city view, and most are equipped with a fridge and wet bar. Each has one king- or two queen-size beds, contemporary mahogany furniture, floral prints on the walls, cable TV (with pay-per-view movies), and two incoming phone lines -- as well as wireless high-speed Internet access. There's also a phone in each bathroom. The standard rooms are very spacious, averaging 750 square feet each, and the 42 suites, which range from two-room parlor suites to grand luxury suites, are even more so.
Burnsley All Suite Hotel
This small, elegant hotel offers suites with private balconies and separate living, bedroom, dining, and fully stocked kitchen areas. The units are handsomely furnished, featuring marble entrance floors and antiques. The suites are expansive (averaging 700 sq. ft.) and popular with travelers who prefer to be a bit away from the hubbub of downtown. The hotel sits on a relatively quiet one-way street a few blocks southeast of the State Capitol. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner on weekdays, and breakfast and dinner on weekends. The menu features fresh salmon, tenderloin, Colorado game plate, and vegetarian dishes. The lounge is a local favorite, a swank space with live jazz on Thursdays and Fridays. The hotel is conveniently situated near the Cherry Creek shopping areas and is only 5 blocks from downtown.
