During your Phoenix vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Huhugam Heritage Center
Although this architectural gem adjacent to the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort was not fully open when I visited, it did have a small exhibit on ancient Native American trading trails through the desert. However, the main reason to visit this new facility operated by the Pima and Maricopa tribes is not only to learn about these tribe's culture, but to admire the fascinating architecture and ethnobotanical garden. The center complex is built within a huge berm that was designed to resemble a giant pot buried in the ground.

CrackerJax Family Fun & Sports Park
Two miniature-golf courses are the main attraction here, but you'll also find a driving range, a professional putting course for grown-up golfers, batting cages, go-cart tracks, a bumper-boat lagoon, and a video-game arcade.

Wells Fargo History Museum
Yes, this museum is small, and yes, it's run by the Wells Fargo Bank, but the collection of artifacts here goes a long way toward conjuring up the Wild West so familiar from Hollywood movies. Not only is there an original Wells Fargo stagecoach on display, but there are also gold nuggets to ogle, old photos from the real Wild West, and plenty of artifacts and memorabilia from the days of stagecoach travel. There are also original paintings by N. C. Wyeth and bronze sculptures by Frederic Remington and Charles Russell.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Phoenix area, including:

Ramada Limited Scottsdale
For convenience and price, this motel can't be beat (at least not in Scottsdale). Located at the west end of the Fifth Avenue shopping district, the Ramada Limited is within walking distance of some of the best shopping and dining in Scottsdale. The three-story building is arranged around a central courtyard, where you'll find the small pool. Guest rooms are large and have been fairly recently renovated.

Renaissance Scottsdale Resort
If I were coming to Scottsdale for a romantic getaway, I would stay here. Located adjacent to the upscale Borgata shopping center (which is designed to resemble the Tuscan hill town of San Gimignano), this is a casual yet luxurious boutique resort that feels like an isolated hideaway. Forget the hustle and bustle of other area resorts. Set amid shady lawns, the Renaissance Scottsdale Resort consists of spacious suites designed for those who need plenty of room and comfort. More than 100 of the suites have their own private hot tubs on private patios (very romantic), and all units are done in Southwestern style. Several excellent restaurants are within walking distance, which makes this a good choice for gourmands who don't want to spend their vacation fighting rush-hour traffic on Scottsdale Road.Facilities: Restaurant (Mediterranean); lounge; poolside snack bar; 2 pools; putting green; 4 tennis courts; access to nearby health club; 2 Jacuzzis; bike rentals; concierge; business center; shopping arcade; 24-hr. room service; massage; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning; croquet court.

Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort
If you love to lounge by the pool, then this resort is a great choice. The Falls, a 3-acre water playground, includes two lagoon pools, a 138-foot water slide, 40-foot cascades, a whirlpool tucked into an artificial grotto, and rental cabanas for that extra dash of luxury. If you're a hiker (as I am), you'll want to make this your first choice in the area. The trails of the North Mountain Recreation Area begin on the edge of the property, and from here you can hike for miles through the desert. The resort also has a golf course, though it is a short drive away. All rooms are spacious suites with Southwest-inspired furnishings; corner units are particularly bright. Situated on the shoulder of North Mountain, this resort has walkways and steep roads (get your heart and brakes checked); at the very top of the property is Different Pointe of View, a pricey restaurant with one of the finest views in the city. This resort is slightly more adult-oriented than the nearby Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort, but is very similar.Facilities: 3 restaurants (Mediterranean, American, Mexican); 2 poolside cafes; 5 lounges; 7 pools; golf course; 2 tennis courts; fitness center (extra charge); small full-service spa; 8 Jacuzzis; sauna; steam room; bike rentals; seasonal children's programs; concierge; car-rental desk; free shuttle between Pointe Hilton properties; business center; room service; massage; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning.
