During your Nashville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Stones River National Battlefield
On New Year's Eve 1862, what would become the bloodiest Civil War battle west of the Appalachian Mountains began just north of Murfreesboro along the Stones River. Though by the end of the first day of fighting the Confederates thought they were assured a victory, Union reinforcements turned the tide against the rebels. By January 3, the Confederates were in retreat and 23,000 soldiers lay dead or injured on the battlefield. Today, 351 acres of the battlefield are preserved. The site includes a national cemetery and the Hazen Brigade Monument, which was erected in 1863 and is the oldest Civil War memorial in the United States. In the visitor center you'll find a museum full of artifacts and details of the battle.
Willie Nelson & Friends Showcase Museum/Gift Emporium
Less a museum than a souvenir shop with a few exhibits in a back room, this tourist site features some of Willie's guitars, gold and platinum records, and even his pool table. The museum is inside the Music Valley Gift Emporium. Allow 20-30 minutes if you're shopping for souvenirs.
Belmont Mansion
Built in the 1850s by Adelicia Acklen, then one of the wealthiest women in the country, this Italianate villa is the city's most elegant historic home open to the public, and its grand salon is one of the most elaborately decorated rooms in any antebellum home in Tennessee. Belmont Mansion was originally built as a summer home, yet no expense was spared in its construction. On your tour of the mansion, you'll see rooms filled with period antiques, artwork, and marble statues. This museum also has an excellent gift shop full of reproduction period pieces. Allow at least 90 minutes to tour the mansion.Shutterbugs, take note: Unlike many museums and historic mansions, photography is permitted inside the Belmont Mansion. So stock up on film or digital-camera cartridges, and click away!
The Millennium Maxwell House Hotel
So just why is a hotel named for a brand of coffee? The original Maxwell House, where President Theodore Roosevelt stayed, was in downtown Nashville. This modern-day successor is a 10-story hotel that sits just off I-265 about 1 1/2 miles (2.5km) north of downtown and is convenient to downtown. The rooms are decorated in muted/earth tones, with your choice of full-size or king-size beds. Rather basic but relaxing and pleasant. South-side rooms on the upper floors of the hotel have a commanding view of the Nashville skyline and are well worth requesting. Glass elevators on the outside of the building also take full advantage of the unobstructed views.Good to the last drop.-Teddy Roosevelt, discussing the coffee at Nashville's Maxwell House Hotel (now known as The Millennium Maxwell House Hotel)
Best Western Hotel Downtown/Music Row
Remodeled in 2001, this is a casual place (formerly a Quality Inn) that has seen a drop in business since the Country Music Hall of Fame moved out of the neighborhood. Bargain-priced rooms are standard, although the suites offer significantly more space for just a few extra dollars. Live music is performed nightly in the lounge, but it won't disturb your sleep.
Hampton Inn-Vanderbilt
This reliable chain motel is located just 1 block from Vanderbilt University and 6 blocks from both Music Row and the Parthenon. Guest rooms are modern and comfortable. You'll find the king rooms particularly spacious. There are quite a few good restaurants within walking distance.
