During your Nashville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Historic Manskers Station Frontier Life Center
Tennessee's earliest pioneer history comes to life here in a reconstruction of a fort built in 1779 by Kasper Mansker and settlers whom he had led to this spot. Today, costumed interpreters who demonstrate the skills and activities of those 18th-century settlers people the fort. Cooking fires send smoke curling from the chimneys of log cabins while weavers spin wool into yarn and woodworkers build rough-hewn furniture. Throughout the year, living-history camps are held on various weekends. During these camps, costumed camp participants live in the style of the pioneers for a few days. In addition to the fort, Historic Manskers Station also includes the Bowen Plantation house. Built between 1785 and 1787, this is the oldest brick house in middle Tennessee and is furnished with 18th-century antiques. Allow 1 hour.
Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art
Once a private estate, Cheekwood today has much to offer both art lovers and garden enthusiasts. The museum and gardens are situated in a 55-acre park that's divided into several formal gardens and naturally landscaped areas. The museum itself is housed in the original Cheek family mansion, which was built in the Georgian style with many architectural details brought over from Europe. Among the mansion's most outstanding features is a lapis lazuli fireplace mantel. Within the building are collections of 19th- and 20th-century American art, Worcester porcelains, antique silver serving pieces, Asian snuff bottles, and a good deal of period furniture. The grounds are designed for strolling, and there are numerous gardens, including: Japanese, herb, perennial, dogwood, magnolia, iris, peony, rose, azalea; and there are greenhouses full of orchids. Kids will enjoy romping around the grassy meadows on the museum grounds. Don't miss the glass bridge that awards hikers along the wooded sculpture trail. You'll also find a gift shop and good restaurant, The Pineapple Room, on the grounds. Allow a couple of hours to tour the museum, or up to a full day if you plan to explore the grounds and garden as well.
Nashville Zoo at Grassmere
This 200-acre park just south of downtown is in the midst of an expansion. In the naturalistic habitats, you'll see river otters, bison, elk, black bear, gray wolves, bald eagles, and cougars, as well as other smaller animals. In the park's aviary, you can walk among many of the state's songbirds, and at the Cumberland River exhibit expect to see fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Allow 2 to 3 hours.
Sheraton Music City
Big, elegant, and set on 23 acres in a modern business park near the airport, this large convention hotel has a commanding vista of the surrounding area. Classic Georgian styling sets the tone and conjures up the feel of an antebellum mansion. In the elegant lobby, you'll find marble floors and burnished cherrywood paneling, and off to one side, a lounge with the feel of a conservatory. Following a recent $8 million renovation, all guest rooms have been updated with new carpeting, furnishings, and bedding. With the business traveler in mind, each room has three phones, large work desks, and plenty of closet space, as well as a couple of comfortable chairs. In the bathrooms, you'll find a coffeemaker and a phone.
Nashville Airport Marriot
This is one of Nashville's most resort-like hotels, featuring lots of recreational facilities, not the least of which is an indoor/outdoor pool that is being renovated for 2004. If you want to stay in shape while you're away from home, this is an excellent choice. The hotel grounds cover 17 landscaped and wooded acres, though the proximity to the highway keeps the grounds rather noisy. Traffic sounds are not a problem if you book an upper-level floor. All the guest rooms feature elegant, classically styled furnishings and come with irons and ironing boards, as well as hair dryers. For business travelers, there are large work desks and a concierge level. Families will do well to ask for a lower-level poolside room; for extra space, try one of the corner rooms, which are 30% larger than standard rooms. The casual restaurant serves a wide range of pasta, poultry dishes and generous salads, and has a pleasant view of the woods outside. A quiet lounge sometimes has live music.
Embassy Suites Nashville
This all-suite hotel makes a great choice and a good value for families, as well as business travelers. Not only do you get a two-room suite, but breakfast and evening cocktails are also included in the rates. These rooms are spacious, modern, and tastefully decorated in warm colors. The centerpiece of the hotel is its large atrium, which is full of tropical plants, including palm trees. A rocky stream runs through the atrium and there are caged tropical songbirds adding their cheery notes to the pleasant atmosphere. The casual restaurant is located amid the tropical plants in the atrium and serves moderately priced meals. Also in the atrium are the lounge where the evening manager's reception is held and a dining area where complimentary breakfast is served.
