During your Nashville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Stones River National Battlefield
On New Year's Eve 1862, what would become the bloodiest Civil War battle west of the Appalachian Mountains began just north of Murfreesboro along the Stones River. Though by the end of the first day of fighting the Confederates thought they were assured a victory, Union reinforcements turned the tide against the rebels. By January 3, the Confederates were in retreat and 23,000 soldiers lay dead or injured on the battlefield. Today, 351 acres of the battlefield are preserved. The site includes a national cemetery and the Hazen Brigade Monument, which was erected in 1863 and is the oldest Civil War memorial in the United States. In the visitor center you'll find a museum full of artifacts and details of the battle.

Grand Old Golf and Games
With three miniature-golf courses, go-kart track and a video arcade, this place, located near the Opryland Hotel, is sure to be a hit with your kids. You can easily spend the whole day here.

James K. Polk House
This modest home was where James K. Polk, the 11th president of the United States, grew up and where he lived when he began his legal and political career. Though Polk may not be as familiar a name as those of some other early presidents, he did achieve two very important goals while in office: Polk negotiated the purchase of California and settled the long-standing dispute between the United States and England over where to draw the border of the Oregon Territory. The house is filled with antiques that belonged to Polk's parents when they lived here and to Polk and his family during their time in the White House. In a separate building there is an exhibit of political and Mexican War memorabilia.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Nashville area, including:

Nashville Marriott at Vanderbilt
Nashville's newest high-rise hotel is a rose-colored class act that rivals the nearby Loews in terms of elegance and sophistication. Upper rooms at the 11-story property offer birds-eye views of both the Vanderbilt football stadium and the Parthenon in nearby Centennial Park. The location is also ideal for those who want to be in the thick of things: it's within a corner of an upscale shopping complex (P.F. Chang's China Bistro is among the tenants) and close to all the West End action. (The down side is that during peak dinner hours and weekends, the hotel parking lot and garage can become a tangled traffic jam.) Guests visiting here on business will appreciate the spacious rooms, which are decorated in soothing cream colors and include well-lighted work desks and multi-line phones. The hotel's new restaurant, Latitude, is drawing raves as a chic spot for cocktails and seafood. In room: A/C, TV w/pay movies and video games, fax, dataport with high-speed Internet access, coffeemaker, hair dryer, iron. Safe deposit boxes available at front desk.

Shoney's Inn-Music Valley
This modern hotel is one of the first lodgings along Music Valley Drive and is within walking distance of the Opryland Hotel. Recent renovations include a new continental breakfast bar and refurbished lobby and lounge. An indoor pool makes this a good choice for an off-season vacation. Five of the 13 suites feature two sleeper-sofas in addition to a king-sized bed, which makes these convenient for families. Small kitchenettes are another bonus. A complimentary airport shuttle is also available.

Renaissance Nashville Hotel
Because it's directly connected to the Nashville Convention Center, this large, modern hotel is often filled with conventioneers and consequently can feel crowded and chaotic. However, it does offer all the expected luxuries. The king rooms (especially the corner kings, which have huge bathrooms) are a better choice than rooms with two beds, which are a bit cramped. However, whichever style room you choose, you'll at least have a comfortable wingback chair in which to relax, and walls of glass let in plenty of light. The upper floors offer additional amenities, including a concierge, private lounge, bathrobes, express checkout, complimentary continental breakfast and evening hors d'oeuvres, and evening turndown service. The Commerce Street Grille, located off the lobby, serves American fare in a sort of Southern-plantation setting. In the greenhouse-like sky bridge you'll find a lounge deli, where Krispy Kreme donuts and Starbucks coffee are available each morning.
