During your Seattle vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Salty's on Alki
Cross the West Seattle Bridge to Alki Beach and this restaurant overlooking Elliott Bay and downtown Seattle. Soft lighting, tabletop candles and linens accent the decor at dinner. Sunlight streams through the huge windows at lunch and Sunday brunch. Small groups and families come here for special occasions, but the guests are primarily couples enjoying the view and the food. Seafood abounds on the menu, from the specialty salmon to oysters, yellowfin tuna, live Maine lobster and Dungeness crab. There is a full bar.
Kaizuka Teppanyaki and Sushi Bar
Shiro Kashiba opened Nikko in this space and made a shining name for himself as Seattle's best sushi chef. He moved Nikko to the Westin Hotel then sold it and set himself up anew at Shiro's in Belltown. Meanwhile Jeff and Lisa Kaizuka took over this space and established their own shrine to Japanese good taste and cuisine. Jeff does his dashing cookery at teppanyaki tables, flashing knives and flash-frying meat and seafood. Lisa waits tables and acts as host. Sushi cuts are generous and modestly priced.
Karam's Lebanese Cuisine
Located below the Bagel Deli, this cozy Middle Eastern restaurant has alcohol listings twice as long as the food descriptions. The focus here is on garlic. Most of the food is cooked in, on, or over garlic, which is great if you're a garlic-lover; not so great on a first date. Dishes include fairly standard but very satisfying selections like lamb skewers, grilled meats, hummus and baba banouj spreads and baklava for dessert.
Pensione Nichols
Located a block from the Pike Place Market, this curiously quaint establishment seems like it fell out of a small European village. Once you work your way inside the single door leading upstairs, you will realize why this is considered by many to be Seattle's best-kept lodging secret. There are two 800-square-foot suites available, each with its own private bath, kitchen, balcony, and spectacular view of Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains. The other rooms share four bathrooms. Some rooms offer astonishing views of the bay, and the enormous breakfast is simply wonderful.
Homewood Suites
This all-suite hotel offers all the amenities of a hotel in an apartment-like setting. It is a great option for longer stays, if you want to cook your own meals, or if you just enjoy having a little more space than a hotel room provides. Stop by the manager's reception, work out in the fitness facilities or take advantage of the business center. You'll soon begin to appreciate the extra conveniences offered here.
Chelsea Station on the Park
This charming bed-and-breakfast is located between Fremont and Woodland Park, just far enough away from downtown to feel comfortably secluded from the chaos. The Margaret Suite, the largest room, features a soaking tub, king-sized bed, and views of the Cascade Mountains and downtown. All of the suites are furnished in the arts-and-crafts style with antiques. A hearty, hot breakfast is included, and the friendly innkeepers will go out of their way to make sure your stay is enjoyable.
