Minnesota History Center
An impressive array of artifacts is housed in this three-story museum, including photographs, music, and videos, much of it designed for hands-on learning and all of it celebrating Minnesota history. Kids especially enjoy sitting in the re-created basement of a Minnesota farmhouse while a simulated tornado passes overhead. Avoid weekday mornings if you don't like to tour with school groups. Minnesota State Capitol
Built in 1905 on a hill overlooking downtown St. Paul, the capitol is crowned by the world's largest unsupported marble dome (modeled after the one Michelangelo created for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome). The interior is equally impressive, with its marble stairways, chambers, and halls, and its oil paintings. Allow 1 hour.

Minnesota Zoo
You'll see most of the exotic animals you expect at the 485-acre Minnesota Zoo, including tigers, camels, dolphins, and monkeys. But this zoo includes an especially nice array of North American animals, including wolves, bison, pumas, and wolverines. During the summer the zoo's working Wells Fargo Family Farm engages visitors with hands-on exhibits and teaches how food travels from the farm to the grocery store shelves. There's also an IMAX theater, and a monorail offering great aerial views. Allow 2 hours.

Located downtown, overlooking the Mississippi River, the Radisson is topped by the Twin Cities' only revolving restaurant. Just across from the Mississippi River, this lovely inn was once an 1893 window shade and blind company; it was converted into an inn in the 1970s. The Nicollet Island Inn Restaurant is highly recommended (as are reservations), featuring contemporary American cuisine and a selection of over 350 wines; it also serves an excellent Sunday brunch ($26 adult, $13 children ages 6-12, free for children 5 and under).
