The latest major addition to Fisherman's Wharf is Aquarium of the Bay, a $38-million, 1-million-gallon marine attraction filled with sharks, stingrays, and more. A moving footpath transports visitors through clear acrylic tunnels. The aquarium ultimately is not a destination in itself, but it's a good place to take the kids if you're in the neighborhood.
Wells Fargo History Museum
Wells Fargo, one of California's largest banks, got its start in the Wild West. Its history museum, at the bank's head office, houses hundreds of genuine relics from the company's whip-and-six-shooter days, including pistols, photographs, early banking articles, posters, a stagecoach, and mining equipment.
The Exploratorium
Scientific American magazine rated the Exploratorium "the best science museum in the world" -- pretty heady stuff for this exciting hands-on science fair. It contains more than 650 permanent exhibits that explore everything from giant-bubble blowing to Einstein's theory of relativity. It's like a mad scientist's penny arcade, an educational fun house, and an experimental laboratory, all rolled into one. Touch a tornado, shape a glowing electrical current, finger-paint using a computer, or take a sensory journey in total darkness in the Tactile Dome ($15 extra) -- you could spend all day here and still not see everything. Every exhibit at the Exploratorium is designed to be interactive, educational, safe and, most important, fun. And don't think it's just for kids; parents inevitably end up being the most reluctant to leave. On the way out, be sure to stop in the wonderful gift store, which is chock-full of affordable brain candy.The museum is in the Marina District at the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts, the only building left standing from the Panama-Pacific Exposition of 1915. The adjoining park and lagoon -- the perfect place for an afternoon picnic -- is home to ducks, swans, seagulls, and grouchy geese, so bring bread.
Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf Hotel
Built in the mid-1970s, this contemporary, four-story hotel offers the reliable comforts of a Sheraton in San Francisco's most popular tourist area. In other words, the clean, modern rooms are comfortable and well equipped but nothing unique to the city. A corporate floor caters exclusively to business travelers.
Villa Florence
Located 1/2 block south of Union Square, fronting the Powell Street cable car line, the seven-story Villa Florence is in one of the liveliest sections of the city (no need to drive, 'cause you're already here). In 2004, a renovation brightened up the reasonably affordable rooms considerably. In its newest reincarnation, Villa Florence provides guests a taste of contemporary Italian flare with all new cherrywood furniture and luxury perks such as 27-inch flatscreen TVs with DVD players (with DVDs upon request) and CD players. You'll like the large, comfortable beds draped in down comforters with Frette duvets, as well as such frivolities as Aveda bath products, Frette bathrobes, and umbrellas. The hotel's ground-floor restaurant helps make it a worthy contender among Union Square's medium-priced inns -- as if the location alone weren't reason enough to book a room. Adjacent to the hotel is Kuleto's, one of downtown's most bustling and stylish Italian restaurants.
Hotel Triton
Described as vogue, chic, retrofuturistic, and even neo-baroque, this Kimpton Group property is whimsy at its boutique-hotel best, from the Dalí-esque lobby to the funky-fun if not a wee bit too small designer suites a la Jerry Garcia, Wyland (the ocean artist), and Santana. Two dozen environmentally sensitive "EcoRooms" -- with biodegradable soaps, filtered water and air, and all-natural linens -- please the tree-hugger in all of us. All the rooms were completely redone in 2002, also the year the hotel welcomed a brand-new and equally whimsical lobby. One bummer: When I stayed in a south-facing suite, I could hear the garbage truck way too early in the morning! The hotel serves coffee each morning, and wine, beer, and tarot readings each evening (included in the room rate) in the lobby. The bustling and casual Café de la Presse, a European-style newsstand and outdoor cafe, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
