Los Angeles Zoo
The L.A. Zoo, which shares its parking lot with the Museum of the American West, has been welcoming visitors and busloads of school kids since 1966. In 1982, the zoo inaugurated a display of cuddly koalas, still one of its biggest attractions. Although it's smaller than the world-famous San Diego Zoo, the L.A. Zoo is surprisingly enjoyable and easy to fully explore. As much an arboretum as a zoo, the grounds are thick with mature shade trees from around the world that help cool the once-barren grounds, and new habitats are light-years ahead of the cruel concrete roundhouses originally used to exhibit animals (though you can't help feeling that, despite the fancy digs, all the creatures would rather be in their natural habitat). Highlights include the Chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains habitat, where visitors can see plenty of primate activity; the Red Ape Rain Forest, a natural orangutan habitat; the entertaining World of Birds show; the Pachyderm Forest (climate-controlled digs for the elephants and hippos, complete with an underwater viewing area); the new mandrills exhibit (the world's largest and most colorful baboons); and the silverback gorilla exhibit. The gargantuan Andean condor had me enthralled as well (the facility is renowned in zoological circles for the successful breeding and releasing of California condors, and occasionally it has some of these majestic and endangered birds on exhibit).The zoo's latest attraction (and one they're rightfully proud of) is the Winnick Family Children's Zoo, a fantastic and forward-thinking children's zoo that contains a petting area, exhibition animal care center, Adventure Theater storytelling and puppet show, and other kid-hip exhibits and activities. Tip: To avoid the busloads of rambunctious school kids, arrive after noon.
Descanso Gardens
Camellias -- evergreen flowering shrubs from China and Japan -- were the passion of amateur gardener E. Manchester Boddy, who began planting them here in 1941. Today his 160-acre Descanso Gardens contain more than 100,000 camellias in more than 600 varieties, blooming under a canopy of California oak trees. The shrubs now share the limelight with a 9-acre International Rosarium, home to hundreds of varieties. This is a very relaxing place, with paths and streams that wind through the towering forest, bordering a lake, bird sanctuary, Japanese Garden & Tea House, and Boddy House art museum. Each season features different plants: daffodils, azaleas, tulips, and lilacs in the spring; chrysanthemums in the fall; and so on. Monthly art exhibits are held in the garden's hospitality house, and the Courtyard Café offers light meals daily from 10am to 3pm. Guided tram tours, which cost $2, run Tuesday through Friday at 1, 2, and 3pm; and Saturday and Sunday at 11am and 1, 2, and 3pm. Picnicking is allowed in specified areas.
Tail o' the Pup
At first glance, you might not think twice about this hot dog-shape bit of kitsch just across from the Beverly Center. But locals adored this closet-size wiener dispensary so much that when it was threatened by the developer's bulldozer, they spoke out en masse to save it. One of the last remaining examples of 1950s representational architecture, the "little dog that could" serves up an "only in L.A." experience to go with its great Baseball Special.
Le Meridien
It took deep pockets to hire renowned French architect Pierre Yves Rochon to orchestrate a multimillion-dollar renovation, but the result is a visual masterpiece of color, form, and function. Whereas the lobby, bar, and other public areas are replete with futuristic furnishings, busy patterns, and saturated colors, the rooms are given a contemporary European look that's both warm and relaxing. Thanks to amenities such as in-room fax machines, three two-line phones, and large counter/desk space, the rooms function equally well as sleeping quarters and work spaces. All things electrical (lights, TV, climate control) are operated by a bedside remote, and the subdued black marble bathrooms hold elegant Hermès products; after a long day on the job, the huge soaking tubs are perfect for unwinding. Even if you're not staying here, you might want to drop by to admire Pierre's talent.
Hotel Oceana
Located right across the street from the ocean, this all-suite hotel sits alongside low-rise, high-rent condos on a gorgeous stretch of Ocean Avenue, several blocks north of the Santa Monica hubbub. With their bright Matisse-style interiors and cushy IKEA-ish furniture, the wonderful apartment-like suites are colorful, modern, and amenity laden: Goodies run the gamut from comfy robes, multiple TVs, and CD players to full gourmet kitchens stocked with Wolfgang Puck microwavable pizzas, Häagen-Dazs pints, and bottles of California Merlot. The enormous size of the suites -- even the studios are huge -- makes the Oceana terrific for families or shares. Oceanview suites feature balconies and two-person whirlpool tubs in the mammoth bathrooms, but don't feel the need to stretch your budget for a view, as all units sit garden-style around the courtyard with its cushiony chaises and boomerang-shape pool. Everything is fresh, welcoming, and noninstitutional -- the primary colors and playful modern style suits the beach location perfectly, and service is excellent -- so it's no wonder advertising execs and others who could stay anywhere make the Oceana their choice for long-term stays.Facilities: Outdoor heated pool; exercise room; access to nearby health club; watersports equipment; concierge; business center; 24-hr. room service; room service from Wolfgang Puck Cafe (7am-10pm); in-room massage; babysitting; laundry service; dry-cleaning service.
Century Plaza Hotel & Spa
Despite the almost-foreboding scale, I really like this hotel. The guest rooms are more beautiful than you'd expect from a corporate resort hotel, with designer furnishings, gorgeous warm-hued textiles, attractive contemporary prints, big closets with terry robes, and almost universally impressive views from the small deck. The beautiful Italian-tile-and-glass bathrooms are some of L.A.'s best. Westin's celestial Heavenly Bed -- touted as "10 layers of heaven" -- is a treat, and the cushioned headboards are a nice finishing touch. Guest office rooms add a fax/printer/copier, an ergonomic desk chair, glare-free task lighting, a coffeemaker, late checkout, and continental breakfast for a few extra dollars. Breeze, the hotel's beautiful 250-seat restaurant and sushi bar designed by architect-of-the-moment Stephen Jacobs, is extremely popular with the L.A. elite, particularly at lunch.Adjoining the hotel is the 35,000-square-foot, Asian-inspired Spa Mystique, the largest in L.A. Features include an epic menu of traditional and Eastern treatments, 27 indoor treatment rooms and several outdoor cabanas, impressive hydrotherapy features (including two Japanese furo pools), salon services, and a fitness center with cardio machines that let you surf the Web as you pump, plus a meditation garden and alfresco spa cafe. Even if you're not staying at the hotel, it's worth a splurge to pamper yourself at this amazing spa.
