Puu o Mahuka Heiau
Go around sundown to feel the mana (sacred spirit) of this Hawaiian place. The largest sacrificial temple on Oahu, it's associated with the great Kaopulupulu, who sought peace between Oahu and Kauai. This prescient kahuna predicted that the island would be overrun by strangers from a distant land. In 1794, three of Captain George Vancouver's men of the Daedalus were sacrificed here. In 1819, the year before New England missionaries landed in Hawaii, King Kamehameha II ordered all idols here to be destroyed.A national historic landmark, this 18th-century heiau, known as the "hill of escape," sits on a 5-acre, 300-foot bluff overlooking Waimea Bay and 25 miles of Oahu's wave-lashed North Coast -- all the way to Kaena Point, where the Waianae Range ends in a spirit leap to the other world. The heiau appears as a huge rectangle of rocks twice as big as a football field (170 ft. by 575 ft.), with an altar often covered by the flower and fruit offerings left by native Hawaiians.
Contemporary Museum
Set up on the slopes of Tantalus, one of Honolulu's upscale residential communities, the Contemporary Museum is renowned for its 3 acres of Asian gardens (with reflecting pools, sun-drenched terraces, views of Diamond Head, and stone benches for quiet contemplation). Its Cades Pavilion houses David Hockney's L'Enfant et les Sortileges, an environmental installation of his sets and costumes for Ravel's 1925 opera, and six galleries display significant works from the last 4 decades. Equally prominent is the presence of contemporary Hawaii artists in the museum's programs and exhibitions. Ask about the daily docent-led tours, and look for an excellent cafe and shop. Depending on your passion for art, you could spend an hour here to all day.
Hawaii Country Club
This public course, located in Wahiawa, is a modest course where golfers usually have no trouble getting a tee time. The 5,861-yard, par-71 course is not manicured like the resort courses, but it does offer fair play, with relatively inexpensive greens fees. Located in the middle of former sugarcane and pineapple fields, the greens and fairways tend to be a bit bumpy and there are a number of tall monkeypod and pine trees to shoot around, but the views of Pearl Harbor and Waikiki in the distance are spectacular. There are a few challenging holes, like the seventh (a 252-yard, par-4), which has a lake in the middle of the fairway and slim pickings on either side. With the wind usually blowing in your face, most golfers choose an iron to lay up short of the water and then pitch it over for par. Facilities include a driving range, practice greens, club rental pro shop, and restaurant.
W Honolulu
It's expensive but worth every penny to be totally pampered in a low-key, elegantly casual hotel that caters to the business traveler but takes excellent care of vacationers, too. The W Honolulu can be summed up in a nutshell by the button on your room phone that says "whatever/whenever." That's what we call service! If you're craving peace and quiet, away from the crowds of Waikiki but want to be close enough (about a 15-min. walk) to shops and restaurants, this is a perfect location. Formerly part of the Colony Surf (the adjacent, beachside condominium), this newly renovated hotel became part of the upscale W chain in 1999. You'll feel like you've entered a luxurious private world here: The hotel lobby looks like an elegant living room, and check-in occurs in the privacy of the guest rooms, which are decorated with handmade teak furniture from Bali. In addition to the large balconies with great views of Diamond Head, there are numerous excellent touches: from Hawaiian music CDs to dual-line cordless phones, plush robes, top-drawer bathroom amenities, twice-daily maid service (great to have clean towels when you return from the beach), and various business equipment available on request.Although W is not on the beach, guests still have access to the small, private beach in front of the Colony Surf (great swimming here), about a 30-second walk away; Kapiolani Park is across the street, and the Waikiki Aquarium is just a few steps away.
Rainbow Inn
This private tropical garden studio, downstairs from the home of retired military officer Gene Smith and his wife, Betty, has panoramic views of Pearl Harbor, the entire south coast of Oahu, and the Waianae and Koolau mountains. A large deck and full-size pool are just outside the apartment's door; inside, the apartment features a double bed, washer/dryer, and kitchen. The Smiths are happy to lend their guests any beach and picnic equipment they might need -- ice chest, beach mats and chairs, even wine glasses. Located near Pearl Ridge Shopping Center, Rainbow Inn is close to all of Oahu's attractions, yet far enough away to provide lots of peace and quiet. And at $75 a night, this is one of Oahu's best bed-and-breakfast deals. Hot tip: Reserve early -- bargains like this book up fast, especially when there's only one room.
Waikiki Beachcomber
