During your Seattle vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Henry Art Gallery
The focus of the Henry Art Gallery, located on the west side of the UW campus, is on contemporary art with retrospectives of individual artists, as well as exhibits focusing on specific themes or media. The museum benefits from large, well-lit gallery spaces illuminated by pyramidal and cubic skylights that can be seen near the main entrance. Photography and video are both well represented, and for the most part, the exhibits are the most avant-garde in the Seattle area. The museum's latest cutting-edge installation is Skyspace, by James Turrell, who uses light to create his artwork. The Skyspace is a small room with an oval opening in the ceiling to frame the sky. At night, the outside of the glass Skyspace is illuminated by an ever-changing light show. The museum also has a cafe and a small sculpture courtyard. Parking is often available at the Central Parking Garage, at NE 41st Street and 15th Avenue NE. Expect the unexpected here -- and prepare to be challenged in your concept of what constitutes art.

Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center
Sort of an interactive promotion for modern fishing and shipping, this facility at the north end of the Seattle waterfront is aimed primarily at kids and has more than 40 hands-on exhibits highlighting Seattle's modern working waterfront and its links to the sea. Exhibits include a kid-size fishing boat, a virtual kayak trip through Puget Sound, and a live radar center that allows you to track the movement of vessels in Elliott Bay. In another exhibit, you get to use a simulated crane to practice loading a scale model of a cargo ship.

Northwest Seaport/Maritime Heritage Center
Although this marine heritage center at the south end of Lake Union is currently little more than a shipyard for the restoration of four historic ships, it has grand plans for the future. If you're a fan of tall ships and the age of sailing, you can pay a visit to the 1897 schooner Wawona, which is currently under restoration. Also being restored are a 1904 lightship, an 1889 tugboat, and a 1933 salmon troller. Throughout the year, there are folk-music concerts ($10 adults, $7 seniors and children) on the deck of the Wawona (call for details), and on the second Friday of each month, there's a free Chantey Sing from 8 to 10pm.Nearby, at Chandler's Cove, you'll find the gift shop and the few small exhibits of the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society, 901 Fairview Ave. N. (tel. 206/624-3028; www.pugetmaritime.org). The shop and exhibits are open daily from noon to 5pm.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Seattle area, including:

Salisbury House
Located on tree-lined 16th Avenue East, this grand old house has a wide wraparound porch from which you can enjoy one of Seattle's prettiest residential streets. Inside, there's plenty to admire as well. Two living rooms (one with a wood-burning fireplace) and a second-floor sun porch provide great spots for relaxing and meeting other guests. On sunny summer days, breakfast may even be served in the small formal garden in the backyard. Guest rooms all have queen-size beds with down comforters; one has a fireplace and a whirlpool tub, while another has an old claw-foot tub. Breakfasts here are deliciously filling and might include fresh fruit, juice, quiche, fresh-baked muffins or bread, and oatmeal pancakes.

Red Lion Seattle Airport
Located almost directly across from the airport's main entrance, this hotel provides comfortable accommodations designed for business travelers. Guest rooms are generally quite large -- if you need space, this is the place. The hotel backs onto a small lake, but only a few rooms have lake views; try to get one of these.

The Westin Seattle
With its distinctive cylindrical towers, the 47-story Westin is the tallest hotel in Seattle and consequently provides the best views of any accommodation in the city. From rooms on the upper floors of the north tower's northwest side, you'll get breathtaking vistas of the Space Needle, Puget Sound, and the Olympic Mountains. Guest rooms here are some of the nicest in town; by the time you read this, both the north and south towers of the hotel will have undergone extensive renovations, which should make this place an even better bet. Couple those great views (seen through unusual curved walls of glass) with the Westin's plush "Heavenly Beds," and you'll be sleeping on clouds both literally and figuratively. Although the pool here doesn't have the great views that the Sheraton's pool has, keep in mind that few downtown hotels have pools at all -- which makes the Westin a good choice for families. There are also two excellent restaurants.
