Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria
This Midtown branch of the Whitney Museum of American Art features an airy sculpture court and a petite gallery that hosts changing exhibits, usually the works of living contemporary artists. Well worth peeking into if you happen to be in the neighborhood. Free gallery talks are offered Wednesdays and Fridays at 1pm.

Washington Square Park
You'll be hard-pressed to find much "park" in this mainly concrete square -- a burial ground in the late 18th century -- but it's undeniably the focal point of Greenwich Village. Chess players, skateboarders, street musicians, New York University students, gay and straight couples, the occasional film crew, and not a few homeless people compete for attention throughout the day and most of the night. (If anyone issues a friendly challenge to play you in the ancient and complex Chinese game of Go, don't take them up on it -- you'll lose money.)In the 1830s, elegant Greek Revival town houses on Washington Square North, known as "The Row" (note especially nos. 21-26), attracted the elite. Stanford White designed Washington Arch (1891-92) to commemorate the centenary of George Washington's inauguration as first president. The arch was refurbished in 2004 and now features exterior lighting.

Spirit Cruises' modern ships are floating cabarets that combine sightseeing in New York Harbor with freshly prepared meals, musical revues, and dancing to live bands. The atmosphere is festive, fun, and relaxed. The buffet meals are nothing special, but they're fine.

WJ Hotel
This is one of the few affordable hotels situated in the heart of my favorite Manhattan neighborhood for dining, Hell's Kitchen. Anyone who stayed here when the WJ was the Washington Jefferson won't recognize the joint after a recent renovation. The lobby has tripled in size and taken on a warm and welcoming ambience, with a friendly, snappily attired staff and more than a dash of designer style. Snazzy red-carpeted halls lead to rooms that are small -- don't say I didn't warn you -- but very attractively outfitted in a palette of soft grays. Nice touches include platform beds with generous cushioned headboards and fluffy goose-down comforters. The gorgeous limestone-and-slate bathrooms are stylish and relatively spacious, although some have showers only. Score 1 of the 18 king rooms if you can; they're roomy and boast a pullout love seat as well as a Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. The Japanese restaurant in the hotel is just a sample of some of the different ethnic cuisines you will find in the neighborhood.

The Lucerne
This magnificent 1903 landmark building has had many incarnations over the years, including one as a dormitory for Columbia University students. But most recently it has been transformed into a luxury boutique hotel, and that transformation has been a triumph on many levels. As a longtime resident of the Upper West Side, I can easily say the Lucerne best captures the feel of that very special neighborhood. Service here is impeccable, especially for a moderately priced hotel; the attentive GM is on top of every detail and everything is fresh and immaculate. The rooms are all comfortable and big enough for kings, queens, or two doubles, with attractive bathrooms complete with travertine counters. Some of the rooms have views not only of the Hudson River, but of one of my favorite pubs, the Dublin House. The suites are extra special here and include a kitchenette, a stocked minifridge, a microwave, and a sitting room with a sofa and extra television. In 2004, the highly rated Nice Matin opened in the hotel, offering room service or breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But if you don't want to dine there, you can sample some of the neighborhood food at nearby Zabar's or H&H Bagels.

Travel Inn
Extras such as a huge outdoor pool and sun deck, a sunny and up-to-date fitness room, and absolutely free parking (with in and out privileges!) make the Travel Inn another terrific deal, similar to the one offered by the Skyline Hotel . Like the Skyline, the Travel Inn may not be loaded with personality, but it does offer the clean, bright regularity of a good chain hotel -- an attractive trait in a city where "quirky" is the catchword at most affordable hotels. Rooms are oversize and comfortably furnished, with extra-firm beds and work desks; even the smallest double is sizable and has a roomy bathroom, and double/doubles make great affordable shares for families. A total renovation over the last couple of years has made everything feel like new, even the nicely tiled bathrooms. The neighborhood has gentrified nicely and isn't as far-flung as you might think: Off-Broadway theaters and great affordable restaurants are at hand, and it's just a 10-minute walk to the Theater District.
