Museum of Modern Art
After two years of being temporarily ensconced in Queens, MoMA returned to its original Manhattan location in late 2004. And though the address is the same, the space is now, with over 630,000 square-feet, almost twice the size of the original. The renovation, designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, highlights space and light, with open rooms, high ceilings, and gardens?a beautiful work of architecture and a perfect complement to the art that resides within. This is where you?ll find van Gogh?s Starry Night, Cezanne?s Bather, Picasso?s Les Demoiselles d?Avignon, and the amazing sculpture by Rodin, Monument to Balzac. Whenever I visit, I like to browse the fun ?Architecture and Design? department, with examples of design for modern appliances, furniture, and even sports cars. MoMA also features edgy new exhibits and a celebrated film series that attracts serious cinephiles. But the heart of the museum, as it was before the renovation, remains the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, which has been enlarged; the museum?s new design affords additional views of this lovely space from other parts of the museum. My only complaint with the new MoMA is its very high ($20) admission charge for adults.

American Museum of the Moving Image
Head here if you truly love movies. Unlike Manhattan's Museum of Television & Radio , which is more of a library, this is a thought-provoking museum examining how moving images -- film, video, and digital -- are made, marketed, and shown; it encourages you to consider their impact on society as well. It's housed in part of the Kaufman Astoria Studios, which once were host to W. C. Fields and the Marx Brothers, and more recently have been used by Martin Scorsese (The Age of Innocence), Woody Allen (Radio Days), Bill Cosby (his Cosby TV series), and Sesame Street.The museum's core exhibit, Behind the Screen, is a thoroughly engaging two-floor installation that takes you step-by-step through the process of making, marketing, and exhibiting moving images. There are more than 1,000 artifacts on hand, from technological gadgetry to costumes, and interactive exhibits where you can try your own hand at sound-effects editing or create your own animated shorts, among other simulations. Special-effects benchmarks -- from the mechanical mouth of Jaws to the blending of past and present in Forrest Gump -- are explored and explained. And in a nod to Hollywood nostalgia, memorabilia that wasn't swept up by the Planet Hollywood chain is displayed, including a Hopalong Cassidy lunch box, an E. T. doll, celebrity coloring books, and Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis hand puppets. Also on display are sets from Seinfeld. Even better are the daily hands-on demonstrations, where you can watch film editors, animators, and the like at work."Insiders' Hour" tours are offered every day at 2pm. Additionally, the museum hosts free film and video screenings, often accompanied by artist appearances, lectures, or panel discussions. Seminars often feature renowned film and TV pros discussing their craft; past guests have included Spike Lee, Terry Gilliam, Chuck Jones, and Atom Egoyan, so it's definitely worth seeing if someone's on while you're in town.

New York Transit Museum
Housed in a real (decommissioned) subway station, this recently renovated underground museum is a wonderful place to spend an hour or so. The museum is small but very well done, with good multimedia exhibits exploring the history of the subway from the first shovelful of dirt scooped up at groundbreaking (Mar 24, 1900) to the present. Kids and parents alike will enjoy the interactive elements and the vintage subway cars, old wooden turnstiles, and beautiful station mosaics of yesteryear. A new exhibit dedicated to surface transportation is On the Streets: New York's Trolleys and Buses. All in all, a minor but remarkable tribute to an important development in the city's history.The even smaller Gallery Annex & Store at Grand Central Station also houses rotating exhibitions and a terrific transit-themed gift shop . Hotel Giraffe
Located in the increasingly fashionable Madison Park area, this hotel is a real charmer with a very, calm, intimate feel to it. Guest rooms are stylish, evoking an urban European character, with high ceilings, velveteen upholstered chairs, and original black-and-white photographs from the '20s and '30s. All the rooms are good size with high ceilings, while deluxe rooms and suites feature French doors that lead to small balconies with large windows and remote-controlled blackout shades. Bathrooms are spacious with plenty of marble counter space and glass-paneled doors, and all rooms have very generous marble-topped desks with free high-speed Internet. But what really separates this hotel from so many others are its services: A continental breakfast is included in the rate and served in the hotel's elegant lobby, where coffee, cookies, and tea are available all afternoon, and wine, cheese, and piano music are offered each evening. There is also a lovely rooftop garden -- the perfect place for a glass of wine or morning coffee during warm weather.

The Mercer
The Mercer, with its heart-of-SoHo location and a celeb-heavy cast of regulars, is the unrivaled epicenter of downtown chic, four sunglasses on the hip scale. The linens are gorgeous textured cottons; there's comfortable seating; and a large work table easily doubles as a dining table. The austerely beautiful tile-and-marble bathrooms have a steel cart for storage, and an oversize shower stall or oversize two-person tub (state your preference when booking). Nice extras include VCRs and CD players, on-screen Web access, and minibars stocked with goodies from Dean & DeLuca.The Kitchen is the French/Asian fusion domain of superstar chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten (of Jean-Georges,); the lobby offers more casual dining, drinking, and scene-making space.

Skyline Hotel
This nice, newly renovated motor hotel offers predictable comforts and some uncommon extras -- inexpensive storage parking ($8 per day) and a lovely indoor pool -- that make it a very good value. A pleasant lobby leads to motel-standard rooms that were, thankfully, recently renovated, and are bigger than most in this price range. There are two room categories: standard, with two twin beds, and deluxe, with either a king bed with sofa or a queen bed. The deluxe with king and sofa is best for families. They boast decent-size closets, small work desks (in most), and double-paned windows that open to let fresh air in, and shut out a surprising amount of street noise when closed. Some rooms have brand-new bathrooms, but the older ones are still fine. Everything is very well kept. Another plus for the family is the pool, which has a nicely tiled deck and plush deck chairs, but it's only open limited hours, so call ahead if it matters.
