During your Minneapolis vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Minnesota State Capitol
Built in 1905 on a hill overlooking downtown St. Paul, the capitol is crowned by the world's largest unsupported marble dome (modeled after the one Michelangelo created for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome). The interior is equally impressive, with its marble stairways, chambers, and halls, and its oil paintings. Allow 1 hour.
Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum
The Weisman Art Museum on the University of Minnesota campus sits on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. You won't miss the trademark Frank Gehry-designed building, its metallic, fluid form gleaming in the sunlight. The building's architecture is probably the best part of the exhibit -- the permanent collection inside is rather small. Canvases by Warhol and Lichtenstein share gallery space with other American artists from the early 20th century. Allow 30 minutes to an hour.
Cathedral of St. Paul
Built in 1915 on the highest point in the city, this cathedral is one of the largest in the country. A replica of St. Peter's in Rome, the building boasts a newly restored 175-foot-high copper dome, a massive rose window, and granite-and-travertine construction. Allow 30 minutes.
Saint Paul Hotel
This beautiful, exquisitely decorated hotel, housed in a 1910 building, makes for a great romantic getaway. The historic property has welcomed many a famous guest over the years, including Calvin Coolidge and Ma Barker. A number of rooms offer great views; all are decorated in elegant European style and feature Aveda toiletries. The hotel is famous for its afternoon tea and the landmark St. Paul Grill.
Minneapolis Marriott City Center
Conveniently located in the heart of downtown, this facility adjoins the three-story City Center shopping mall and is within walking distance of the Target Center and much of the city's nightlife. The hotel caters to the convention crowds and the rooms are standard business hotel issue. The staff is friendly and attentive.
Le Meridien Minneapolis
The most recent -- and most anticipated -- addition to Minneapolis's hotel scene, this downtown hotel marks the first of Le Meridien's Art + Tech hotels, designed to immerse guests in an environment marrying contemporary design and top-of-the-line technology. Amenities include custom, etched-glass headboards; modern artworks; in-room entertainment systems; Hermès toiletries; bathrobes; and 42-inch plasma TV screens.
