Brooklyn Tabernacle
Under the direction of passionate orator Pastor Jim Cymbala and his choral-director wife, Carol, this nondenominational Christian revival church has grown into one of the largest -- with a congregation of nearly 10,000 from all walks of city life -- and most renowned inner-city churches in the nation. Folks come from all over the world to see the 275-voice, four-time Grammy Award-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, one of the nation's most celebrated gospel choirs.Brooklyn Tabernacle relocated from Flatbush Avenue to 392 Fulton St., on Fulton Mall in the heart of downtown Brooklyn, in mid-2002. The gloriously renovated 1918 building is the fourth-largest theatrical space in the five boroughs, and seats nearly 4,000 for each service. Still, come early for a prime seat, especially when the choir sings (at the noon and 4pm Sun services).

Liberty Helicopters
How about a bird's-eye view of Manhattan? These flight-seeing trips offer a quick thrill -- literally. Five-minute tours from Midtown take in the USS Intrepid, Midtown skyscrapers, and Central Park, while longer tours last 10 or 15 minutes and take in a wider view that includes Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. If you opt for the longest tour, you'll also fly far enough uptown to take in the George Washington Bridge and Yankee Stadium. Flights leave every 15 minutes daily from 9am to 9pm, but note that reservations are required for two or more.

Times Square
There's no doubting that Times Square has evolved into something much different than it was over a decade ago when it had a deservedly sleazy reputation. Yet there is much debate among New Yorkers about which incarnation was better. For New Yorkers, Times Square is a place we go out of our way to avoid. The crowds, even by New York standards, are stifling; the restaurants, mostly national chains, aren't very good; the shopping, also mostly national chains, are unimaginative; and the attractions, like Madame Tussaud's New York wax museum, are kitschy. I suppose it's a little too Vegas for us. Still, you've come all this way; you've got to at least take a peek, if only for the amazing neon spectacle of it.Most of the Broadway shows are centered around Times Square, so plan your visit around your show tickets. For your pre-dinner meal, walk 2 blocks west to Ninth Avenue where you'll find a number of relatively inexpensive, good restaurants. If you are with the kids, the Ferris wheel in the Toys "R" Us store makes a visit to Times Square worthwhile.

The Sherry-Netherland
Housed in a wonderful 1927 neo-Romanesque building overlooking Fifth Avenue and Central Park, the Sherry-Netherland is one of a kind: It's both a first-class hotel and a quietly elegant residential building where the guest rooms are privately owned co-ops. As a result, the rooms vary greatly in style, but each is grandly proportioned with high ceilings, big bathrooms, and walk-in closets. The rooms are very spacious and every one features high-quality furnishings and art. About half are suites with kitchenettes that have a cooktop or microwave, often both.You'll pay more for a lighter, park- or street-facing room; the views are stunning, but the lower floors can be noisy for light sleepers. Interior-facing rooms are darker and quieter but no less fabulous, and a lot cheaper; one of my favorites is no. 814, an Art Deco-contemporary one-bedroom with a gorgeous marble bathroom, a terrific kitchen with bar, and a wealth of luxurious space. If you'd prefer a more traditionally styled room, let the excellent staff know. The hotel is old-world formal but not the least bit stuffy.Packed with Armani-suited moguls, million-dollar models, and East Side denizens, Harry Cipriani's restaurant, located on the lobby level, is the ultimate power spot; the wildly expensive food is excellent (especially the pappardelle with in-season mushrooms), as is the tuxedoed service.

The Marcel
Being budget-challenged doesn't mean you have to settle for boring. This Gramercy Park hotel offers high style and a super-hip scene at low, low prices. Thanks to designers Goodman Charlton, who love to infuse retro styles with futuristic freshness, the Marcel sits on the cutting edge style-wise. Fab faux Mod Squad-era Scandinavian stylings in the lobby lead to guest rooms boasting gorgeous blond-wood built-ins that make clever use of limited space, and a bold geometric cushioned headboard adds a downright luxurious flair. The designer furnishings and textiles look and feel expensive, even if the somewhat lumpy beds don't; still, budget travelers will be thrilled. Even if the service isn't fabulous or the little details aren't perfect, you should feel like you're getting a great deal here.One of the strongest appeals of the Marcel is Spread (www.spreadnyc.com), a restaurant/lounge hybrid offering a creative small plates menu, a first-rate sushi bar, terrific cocktails, and a blast of an after-dark scene. The subterranean lounge Coal is an even more seductive space.

W Union Square
Uberarchitect David Rockwell transformed the magnificent 1911 Guardian Life building overlooking leafy Union Square into a new gem, successfully fusing original beaux arts detailing with bold, clean-lined modernism and a relaxing, grown-up air. Rooms boast distinctive touches such as luminous mother-of-pearl counters in the bathrooms. Star chef Todd English's Mediterranean-accented Olives gets raves, and nightclub impresario Rande Gerber's dark and sultry Underbar is just downstairs.
