Skyscraper Museum
Wowed by the sheer verticality in this town? Awed by the architectural marvel that is the high-rise? You're not alone. If you'd like to learn more about the technology, culture, and sheer muscle behind it all, seek out this formerly itinerant museum, which will move into its first permanent home in 2004 in the 38-story Skidmore, Owings & Merrill tower that also houses the Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park. The new space comprises two galleries, one housing a permanent exhibition dedication to the evolution of Manhattan's commercial skyline, the other for changing shows.
Museum of Jewish Heritage -- A Living Memorial to the Holocaust
Located in the south end of Battery Park City, the Museum of Jewish Heritage occupies a strikingly spare six-sided building designed by award-winning architect Kevin Roche, with a six-tier roof alluding to the Star of David and the 6 million murdered in the Holocaust. The permanent exhibits -- Jewish Life a Century Ago, The War Against the Jews, and Jewish Renewal -- recount the daily prewar lives, the unforgettable horror that destroyed them, and the tenacious renewal experienced by European and immigrant Jews in the years from the late 19th century to the present. The museum's power derives from the way it tells that story: through the objects, photographs, documents, and, most poignantly, through the videotaped testimonies of Holocaust victims, survivors, and their families, all chronicled by Steven Spielberg's Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. Thursday evenings are dedicated to panel discussions, performances, and music, while Sundays are dedicated to family programs and workshops; a film series is also a regular part of the calendar. Children's Museum of Manhattan
Here's a great place to take the kids when they're tired of being told not to touch. Designed for ages 2 to 12, this museum is strictly hands-on. Interactive exhibits and activity centers encourage self-discovery -- and a recent expansion means that there's now even more to keep the kids busy and learning. The Time Warner Media Center takes children through the world of animation and helps them produce their own videos. The Body Odyssey is a zany, scientific journey through the human body. This isn't just a museum for the 5-and-up set -- there are exhibits especially designed for babies and toddlers, too. The busy schedule also includes daily art classes and storytellers, and a full slate of entertainment on weekends.
The Benjamin
From the retro sign and clock on Lexington Avenue to the high-ceilinged marble lobby, when you enter The Benjamin, it's as if you've suddenly stepped into the jazz era of New York of the 1920s. But once you get to your spacious room and notice the numerous high-tech amenities, such as Bose Wave radios, Internet browsers and video games for the TVs, high-speed Internet access, fax machines, ergonomic chairs and moveable workstation, you will know you are most definitely in the 21st century. Many of the amenities are geared toward business travelers, but why should they be the only ones to experience all this comfort and luxury? All rooms are airy, but the deluxe studios and one-bedroom suites are extra large. There are even a few one-bedroom suites with terraces. How many hotels can claim a "sleep concierge" or guarantee a good night's sleep? And don't forget the pillow menu featuring 11 options, including buckwheat and Swedish Memory, in which foam designed by NASA reacts to your body temperature. I chose the standard down pillow and did not have to exercise the guarantee. If you are a light sleeper, however, book a room off Lexington Avenue, which can get very busy most weeknights and mornings. Bathrooms feature Frette robes, TV speakers, and water pressure from the shower head strong enough to make you think you've just experienced a deep-tissue massage. Hotel Plaza Athénée
This hideaway in New York's toniest neighborhood (the stretch of Madison Ave. in the 60s), is a mirror image of that elevated social strata; it's elegant, luxurious, and oozing with sophistication. With antique furniture, hand-painted murals, and the Italian marble floor that adorns the exquisite lobby, the Plaza Athénée has a distinctly European feel. And in that tradition, service here is as good as it gets, with personalized check-in and attentive staff at every turn.The rooms, which come in a variety of shapes and sizes, are all high-ceilinged and spacious; entrance foyers give them a real residential feel. The rooms are designed in rich fabrics and warm colors that help set a tone that makes you want to lounge in your room longer than you should. The suites have so much closet space it made this New Yorker, used to miniscule apartment closets, very envious. All of the suites have chaises, which you don't see too often in New York hotels, and a few have terraces large enough to dine out on. The Portuguese marble bathrooms are outfitted with thick robes made exclusively for the hotel; put one on and you might never want to take it off. The lush lounge is appropriately called Bar Seine and is a welcome spot for a pre-dinner cocktail. The restaurant, Arabelle, receives high praise for its weekend brunch. Though not the most technologically advanced hotel -- the televisions are old and there are no VCRs or DVD players -- you don't come to the Plaza Athénée for high tech, you come to escape it.
The Alex
One of the few new hotels to debut in 2003, The Alex not only continues the trend of high style, it takes it to a new level. The hotel's theme is serenity and comfort, and that's a tough task when you are located in the middle of one of the busiest sections of Manhattan. Renowned designer David Rockwell, using his trademark economically sleek, moderne style, has created a soothing and very glossy retreat. Each room features furniture designed exclusively for the hotel, such as the four mobile pieces -- a chair, a low game table, a coffee table that rises to dining table height, and a nightstand. And all rooms, which range from large junior suites to one- and two-bedroom apartments, also feature state-of-the-art full kitchens with sub-zero refrigerators that are so cleverly designed it took this high-style innocent way too long to distinguish it from the other kitchen amenities. But who needs a refrigerator when you can order room service from the hotel's fabulous restaurant, Riingo ?You'll also find flat-panel televisions in each room and in the bathrooms, which feature rain-forest showers and Frederic Fekkai products. Efficiency is the key word here, and service goes out of its way to make sure they meet the specific needs of each of the hotel's guests. My only real complaint is that in their search for efficiency, the workspace, hidden inside a closet, is much too small. But why come here to work when there are all those toys and gadgets to play with?
