Sony Wonder Technology Lab
Not as much of an infomercial as you'd expect. Both kids and adults love this four-level high-tech science and technology center, which explores communications and information technology. You can experiment with robotics, explore the human body through medical imaging, edit a music video, mix a hit song, design a video game, and save the day at an environmental command center. The lab also features the first high-definition interactive theater in the United States. Admission is absolutely free; this place is extremely popular, however, so it's wise to make reservations in advance. Reservations can be made up to 2 weeks in advance by calling tel. 212/833-5414 on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday between 11am and 4pm. Otherwise, you may not get in, or you may get tickets that require you to return at a different time.
Battery Park
As you traverse Manhattan's concrete canyons, it's sometimes easy to forget that you're actually on an island. But here, at Manhattan's southernmost tip, you get the very real sense that just out past Liberty, Ellis, and Staten islands is the vast Atlantic Ocean.The 21-acre park is named for the cannons built to defend residents after the American Revolution. Castle Clinton National Monument (the place to purchase tickets for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferry; see listings earlier in this chapter) was built as a fort before the War of 1812, though it was never used as such. The 22-ton bronze sphere by Fritz Koenig that was recovered from the rubble of the World Trade Center, where it stood on the plaza between the two Twin Towers as a symbol of global peace, now stands -- severely damaged but still whole. This may be the finest place in the city to pay tribute to those who were lost.Besides the requisite T-shirt vendors and hot-dog carts, you'll find several statues and memorials scattered throughout the park. This is quite the civilized park, with lots of STAY OFF THE GRASS! signs and Wall Streeters eating deli sandwiches on the many park benches. Pull up your own bench for a good view out across the harbor.
Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum
Part of the Smithsonian Institution, the Cooper-Hewitt is housed in the Carnegie Mansion, built by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie in 1901 and renovated to the tune of $20 million in 1996. Some 11,000 square feet of gallery space is devoted to changing exhibits that are invariably well conceived, engaging, and educational. Shows are both historic and contemporary in nature, and topics range from The Work of Charles and Ray Eames: A Legacy of Invention to Russell Wright: Creating American Lifestyle to The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks. Many installations are drawn from the museum's own vast collection of industrial design, drawings, textiles, wall coverings, books, and prints.On your way in, note the fabulous Art Nouveau-style copper-and-glass canopy above the entrance. And be sure to visit the garden, ringed with Central Park benches from various eras.
The Muse

Pluses include plump feather beds, CD players, cordless phones, business cards personalized with your name and in-house direct-dial line, and handsome, well-outfitted bathrooms.Off the lobby is District, one of Broadway's best restaurants, with warm, comfortable interiors by David Rockwell (Nobu). A star on every front.
The Kimberly
Surprisingly good rates on suites here mean that you could be standing on your private balcony overlooking Manhattan for a lot less than you'd pay for a cell-like room in many other Midtown hotels. Most New Yorkers don't have it this good: These are full apartments with dining areas; living rooms with Oriental rugs; full-size, fully equipped kitchens complete with china and cookware; marble bathrooms; tons of closet space; and private unfurnished balconies (in all but eight suites) -- it's all part of the package. The executive suites have a larger living space, but the standard one-bedrooms are just fine for most. The two-bedroom suites each have two bathrooms; you can choose between a configuration that adjoins the bedrooms or puts them at opposite ends of the apartment (great for couples traveling together). The 21 regular rooms are handsome and comfortable, too, with extra-nice bathrooms with deep tubs. Additional amenities include two-line phones and plush robes. The hotel may not be the most stylish place in town, but it's done in an attractive traditional style that's cozy and comfortable, and everything is in very good condition.A unique perk is complimentary boarding of a 75-foot yacht for a 3-hour sunset cruise (weekends May-Oct, weather permitting).Facilities: 2 restaurants; 2 bars; free access to fabulous New York Health & Racquet Club, with pool, classes, racquetball courts, and indoor golf; concierge; room service (6am-11pm); in-room massage; babysitting; dry cleaning/laundry service; executive-level rooms.
The Michelangelo
Owned by the Italian-based Starhotel, this is the group's only U.S. property and it offers a very welcome dose of Italian hospitality in the heart of New York. From the moment you enter the spacious lobby adorned with Italian marble, you feel as if you have suddenly departed from the rapid-fire sight and sound assault of nearby Times Square. Off the lobby is a nice lounge where coffee and cappuccino are served all day and a complimentary Italian breakfast of pastries and fruit is offered each morning. The rooms come in various sizes and are curiously decorated in three different styles: Art Deco, country French, and neo-classical. I prefer the country French, but whatever the style, the rooms are all of a good size and include marble foyers, Italian fabrics, king beds, and two television sets (one in the bathroom). The bathrooms are well maintained and feature deep whirlpool bathtubs. Limoncello, the hotel's Mediterranean restaurant, offers lunch, dinner, and an innovative breakfast (try the polenta pancakes). Service is helpful and friendly, creating a relaxed, casual atmosphere rare in many New York hotels.
