During your Newark vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

New York Aquarium
Because of the long subway ride (about an hour from Midtown Manhattan) and its proximity to Coney Island, it's best to combine the two attractions, preferably in the summer. This surprisingly good aquarium is home to hundreds of sea creatures. Taking center stage are Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins and California sea lions that perform daily during summer at the Aquatheater. Also basking in the spotlight are gangly Pacific octopuses, sharks, and a brand-new sea horse exhibit. Black-footed penguins, California sea otters, and a variety of seals live at the Sea Cliffs exhibit, a re-creation of a Pacific coastal habitat. But my absolute favorites are the beautiful white Beluga whales, which exude buckets of aquatic charm. Children love the hands-on exhibits at Discovery Cove. There's an indoor oceanview cafeteria and an outdoor snack bar, plus picnic tables.

International Center of Photography
The ICP is one of the world's premier educators, collectors, and exhibitors of photographic art. The state-of-the-art gallery space is ideal for viewing rotating exhibitions of the museum's 50,000-plus prints as well as visiting shows. The emphasis is on contemporary photographic works, but historically important photographers aren't ignored. A must on any photography buff's list.

National Museum of the American Indian, George Gustav Heye Center
This impressive collection represents the Smithsonian Institution. The collection will be housed in New York only until its new home on the Mall in Washington, D.C., is completed in 2004. The collection spans more than 10,000 years of native heritage, gathered a century ago mainly by New York banking millionaire George Gustav Heye. About 70% of the collection is dedicated to the natives of North America and Hawaii; the rest represents the cultures of Mexico and Central and South America. There's a wealth of material here, but it's not as well organized as it could be. The museum also hosts temporary themed exhibitions and interpretive programs, plus free storytelling, music, and dance presentations. The museum is housed in the beautiful 1907 beaux arts U.S. Customs House, designed by Cass Gilbert and a National Historic Landmark that's worth a look in its own right.

The Westin New York At Times Square
One of the newest additions to the Times Square landscape is this happy, welcome paradox: a high-tech, high-style, high-rise with a warm, yet quirky, personality. The warmth comes from the inside, from the extra-attentive staff, but the quirkiness is outside, realized in its odd, wavy exterior. The 10-color, mostly copper and blue, glass edifice looks more like a transplant from Miami Beach than something familiar to the New York City terrain. No wonder -- the hotel was designed by the Miami-based architectural firm Arquitectonica. And if that isn't enough to distinguish itself, the hotel also boasts a beam of light that rises through an atrium, then up to the top of the 45-story tower and into the already well-illuminated sky of Times Square.Though style is big here, there's plenty of substance, too. The rooms are spacious, with the Club Rooms and Suites being the biggest. All feature the same amenities, including Westin's truly celestial Heavenly Bed -- a custom Simmons Beautyrest pillow-top mattress set dressed in layer upon layer of fluffy down and crisp white linen -- and the signature Heavenly Bath, featuring the luxurious two-head shower. The hotel is located on very busy Eighth Avenue, taking up the block between 42nd and 43rd streets; rooms facing 42nd Street and Eighth can be loud. The hotel also features a state-of-the-art fitness center and spa, but surprisingly, there is a fee for guests to use the facility.Facilities: Restaurant; bar; 2,500-sq.-ft. fitness center and spa ($10 per day, $30 per week); concierge and theater desk; business center; room service; dry cleaning/laundry service; currency exchange; internal access to E Walk, a 200,000-sq.-ft. entertainment and retail complex featuring a 13-movie theater.

Trump International Hotel & Tower
From the outside, it's the prototypical, not very attractive Trump creation -- a tall, dark monolith, hovering over Columbus Circle and lower Central Park. But go inside and spend a night or two at the Trump International, experience services such as your own Trump Attache, a personal concierge who will provide comprehensive services (your wish is their command); take advantage of such first-class facilities as the 6,000-square-foot health club with lap pool and a full-service spa; or order room service from the hotel's signature restaurant, the four-star Jean Georges. Not only will you immediately dispel any prejudices you might have had toward The Donald, you might even begin to comprehend why someone would be willing to sell their soul for the chance to become the Master Builder's apprentice.Guest rooms are surprisingly understated, with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, some with incredible views of Central Park and all with telescopes for taking in the view, and marble bathrooms with Jacuzzi tubs and sumptuous bathrooms. But if that's not enough -- it certainly was for me -- you also get two complimentary bottles of Trump water, complete with a picture of The Donald on each one. For a hotel this well run, you can forgive the man for his excesses. In room: A/C, TV/VCR w/pay movies and video games, fax/copier/printer, dataport and high-speed connectivity, minibar, coffeemaker, hair dryer, iron, laptop-size safe, DVD/CD player.

The Phillips Club
Located in the heart of Lincoln Center, the Phillips Club was one of the first extended-stay hotels to open in Manhattan, but your stay doesn't have to be long to appreciate the hotel's many amenities. Offering spacious suites and one-bedroom apartments with full granite kitchens, the Phillips Club is less a hotel than a home away from home. The lobby is minimalist and maybe not as warm and welcoming as many hotels, but the staff is friendly and helpful. All units have that sophisticated New York City apartment feel and are equipped with big work desks with ergonomic chairs, sofa beds, and home entertainment centers; the nearby Tower Records store will even deliver videos to your room. The marble bathrooms are large, though not extravagant. There are washers and dryers on each floor, and though there is no restaurant on the premises, Balducci's, the gourmet grocery store located next door to the hotel, will deliver a full continental breakfast, sandwiches, or anything else they make to your room. Guests have access to the Reebok Sports Club/NY, one of the most exclusive and largest fitness clubs in Manhattan, which features 140,000 square feet of exercise space, including two basketball courts, an Olympic-size pool, and a 40-foot climbing wall. The apartment-like amenities make the hotel a good, though expensive, option for families or for anyone seeking a bit more control over their environment while visiting the city.
