During your Minneapolis vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Minnesota Museum of American Art
The Twin Cities' only museum dedicated solely to American art, the MMAA has been around for over 30 years, but its new Riverfront Gallery, which opened in 2004, makes the museum feel new. Works range from the mid-19th century to the present with a special emphasis on Minnesota and regional artists. Frequent special exhibitions are popular and also focus on American and regional themes. Allow 1 hour.

University of Minnesota
One of the Midwest's oldest (1851) and most important universities, with 50,000 students on the Twin Cities campus, the UMN offers three significant museums -- the James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History, the University Art Gallery, and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum . The 4,800-seat Northrop Auditorium has been a home for distinguished performances since 1929, and the University Theatre has four separate stages.

Mississippi River Visitor Center
Located inside the entrance to the Science Museum of Minnesota , the Mississippi River Visitor Center is operated by the National Park Service and designed to educate visitors about the Mississippi National River & Recreation Area. Park rangers can assist travelers with planning outdoor excursions, including canoe and riverboat trips, hiking, biking, and birding. If you're at all outdoorsy, it's worth a stop.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Minneapolis area, including:

Best Western Kelly Inn
This older, plain facility is a good bet for families on a tight budget -- the affordable inn features basic but comfortable accommodations. All of the city's downtown attractions are less than a mile away and an indoor pool means there's always something fun to do, whatever the weather. Some rooms offer scenic views and some units have whirlpools.

Radisson Riverfront St. Paul
Located downtown, overlooking the Mississippi River, the Radisson is topped by the Twin Cities' only revolving restaurant. The hotel's second-floor patio offers a nice river view, and the majority of the comfortable guest rooms offer views as well. Make sure to request an upper or corner room -- the others tend to be noisy.

Nicollet Island Inn
Just across from the Mississippi River, this lovely inn was once an 1893 window shade and blind company; it was converted into an inn in the 1970s. The individually decorated rooms are furnished with offbeat originality; all rooms offer VCRs and freshly baked cookies, and some have Jacuzzis. The Nicollet Island Inn Restaurant is highly recommended (as are reservations), featuring contemporary American cuisine and a selection of over 350 wines; it also serves an excellent Sunday brunch ($26 adult, $13 children ages 6-12, free for children 5 and under).
