During your Minneapolis vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Mill City Museum
Minneapolis's newest museum recounts the history of the flour milling industry that earned the city the nickname "Mill City" in the late 19th century. Set in the ruins of what was once the world's largest flour mill, and one of over two dozen such Minneapolis mills, the museum re-creates old milling techniques with period equipment, railroad cars, and interactive exhibits. Visitors also learn the impact of the nation's first high-quality, finely milled flour on the Twin Cities and the country. Allow 1 hour.
Minnesota Zoo
You'll see most of the exotic animals you expect at the 485-acre Minnesota Zoo, including tigers, camels, dolphins, and monkeys. But this zoo includes an especially nice array of North American animals, including wolves, bison, pumas, and wolverines. During the summer the zoo's working Wells Fargo Family Farm engages visitors with hands-on exhibits and teaches how food travels from the farm to the grocery store shelves. There's also an IMAX theater, and a monorail offering great aerial views. Allow 2 hours.
University of Minnesota
One of the Midwest's oldest (1851) and most important universities, with 50,000 students on the Twin Cities campus, the UMN offers three significant museums -- the James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History, the University Art Gallery, and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum . The 4,800-seat Northrop Auditorium has been a home for distinguished performances since 1929, and the University Theatre has four separate stages.
Le Meridien Minneapolis
The most recent -- and most anticipated -- addition to Minneapolis's hotel scene, this downtown hotel marks the first of Le Meridien's Art + Tech hotels, designed to immerse guests in an environment marrying contemporary design and top-of-the-line technology. Amenities include custom, etched-glass headboards; modern artworks; in-room entertainment systems; Hermès toiletries; bathrobes; and 42-inch plasma TV screens.
Nicollet Island Inn
Just across from the Mississippi River, this lovely inn was once an 1893 window shade and blind company; it was converted into an inn in the 1970s. The individually decorated rooms are furnished with offbeat originality; all rooms offer VCRs and freshly baked cookies, and some have Jacuzzis. The Nicollet Island Inn Restaurant is highly recommended (as are reservations), featuring contemporary American cuisine and a selection of over 350 wines; it also serves an excellent Sunday brunch ($26 adult, $13 children ages 6-12, free for children 5 and under). Doubletree Park Place
Located 3 1/2 miles west of downtown, this hotel boasts a five-story pool atrium and reasonable rates outside the hubbub of the busy downtown area. The spacious guest rooms were designed with business travelers in mind, but are perfectly comfortable for leisure travelers as well.
