During your Indianapolis vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art
This impressive $14-million building houses one of the country's most notable collections of Native American and Western art. The "Art of the American West" collection includes works by Frederic Remington and Georgia O'Keeffe. The Native American artifacts include clothing, beadwork, and pottery from all over North America.
Children's Museum of Indianapolis
This is one of the largest children's museums in the world, with interactive exhibits covering everything from archaeology to world cultures to biotechnology, plus extensive toy and dollhouse displays, a working antique carousel ($1 per ride), and a planetarium. At press time, the museum was about to open Dinosphere, a $25-million multisensory exhibit that's a unique attempt to combine serious science (a working laboratory and the largest collections of juvenile fossils in the world) with kid-friendly interactive exhibits (dressing up in a dinosaur costume to sit on a nest of simulated eggs). If you have kids, this is the place to take them.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Built in 1909, this is one of the most celebrated auto raceways in the world. Each May, more than 400,000 spectators throng to the 2.5-mile oval course to watch the Indianapolis 500, the largest single-day sporting event in the world, boasting the largest purse in motor racing. The Speedway also hosts the United States Grand Prix in June and the NASCAR Brickyard 400 in August. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum (open daily 9am-5pm; $3 adults, $1 children 6-15) is within the track's oval. The 433-acre speedway also features a PGA course (4 holes inside the track and 14 outside).
Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort & Inn
This conventional motel with standard rooms is noteworthy because of its location -- outside turn two on the Indianapolis Speedway. But its location is really the only reason to stay here -- unless you plan to spend all your time at the track, you're better off elsewhere. Refrigerators are available in king rooms for no extra charge.
Courtyard by Marriott Downtown
This downtown chain hotel is nicely situated on the edge of White River State Park and across the street from the Eiteljorg Museum. The unusually clean and well-maintained rooms are bright and cheerful, and some have terraces. There's also a 24-hour exercise room.
The Canterbury
This charming European-style hotel, with direct access into Circle Centre, sports "a bit of England" and is a registered historic landmark. This is where most celebrities stay when they're in Indianapolis, and it's the best in town. Rooms are large, with four-poster beds, armoires, bathroom telephones, and refrigerators. Tea is served daily.
